Welcome Summer Students!

Welcome to CS/IT285L: Social Issues and Ethics in Computing. The summer 2021 semester will soon begin!

Please familiarize yourself with this website, as along with Blackboard it will be the main resource for you throughout the semester. It is imperative that you click through all the links you see on the right side of the page (or at the bottom of the page on mobile) so you’ll know what’s going on this semester.

Our class meets Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday form 10:00am – 11:30am. Summer 2021 courses are still online, which isn’t great, but we’ll make the best of it!

All students must complete initial registration for the Zoom sessions. Use your real name for the registration process. Names may differ from Blackboard but cannot be anonymous: Elizabeth Jones can register as “Liz Jones”, but not as “Pikachu95”. You only need to register once, and may then attend all the scheduled meetings.

The meeting ID is 912 0986 0532. The password is 574927.

Here’s a link straight to the class Zoom meeting (only works once you’re registered and you’ll still need the passcode above).

In order to raise your hand on Zoom, click Participants, then Raise Hand.

Do you have to turn on your camera? Please do. Especially in our current environment of prolonged isolation, seeing groups of your peers in class can be motivating and comforting for everyone. There are no deductions, however, for choosing to keep your camera off.

All assignments (BOS test, write-ups, homework discussions, midterm, projects, final paper) will take place on Blackboard. See individual instructions for each assignment.

Office hours are on Zoom, by appointment, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30am-12:15pm. The meeting ID is the same as the one for the lectures. Other times may be available; email to request an appointment.

I’m looking forward to having you in class!
