Today is the Career Fair! Are you ready? Dress to impress!

The Career Fair is TODAY from 1 to 4pm in the Clark Athletic Center!  Are you prepared?  Have you registered and researched the companies who will be attending, and have a game plan for talking with each of them?  Have you polished your resume?  Do you have an elevator pitch (15-30 seconds on who you are and what you’re looking for?)  Are you planning to bring something professional to collect things in?  (A bag or pad-folio can go a long way!)  And, last but not least, are you prepared to be professionally dressed?

Business etiquette for professional attire can vary based on gender.  Here are some helpful tips when considering attire for the Career Fair.

Men: Your suit should fit, be ironed, nicely tailored, and conservative regarding color choices.  A tie is almost always a good idea, and make sure you have shined, closed-toed shoes (with matching socks) as well. Your shoes and belt should match if you choose to wear one, be careful of too much cologne, and make sure your facial hair is kept neat.  Piercings and tattoos should be minimized or covered if possible.

Women: Your suit should fit, be nicely tailored, avoid overpowering patterns, and be conservative regarding color choices.  Avoid distracting jewelry, revealing clothing, overpowering perfume, and makeup that could be considered distasteful.  Shined, closed toes shoes with low heels are recommended (you will be standing for some time).

All students:  Make sure your hair is neat, choose mints over gum, and leave your phone in your pocket/bag unless you’re using it to take down some employer information!  And remember…the best thing you can wear is a smile!

Reminder, check IN with Career Services at the entry to the hockey rink in the Clark Athletic Center, and check OUT for MAP miles in the lobby after you’re finished.  We will start checking out at approximately 1:45pm, so you should plan to spend some time with all the employers in the room!

Comments Off on Your MAP Miles and MGT 490 Registration

Your MAP Miles and MGT 490 Registration

College of Management students are required to participate in the Management Achievement Program (MAP). Students in MAP must complete 75% of their required MAP miles before registering for MGT 490. You can view your earned MAP Miles by logging on to the CMWeb, as well as view a schedule of upcoming events there and here on the blog (MAP page or weekly posts).

It is important to note that we cannot save a spot in MGT 490 for someone planning to complete their MAP miles, or register students with fewer than 75% of their miles earned.

Once all pre-requisites for MGT 490, including MAP Miles, are earned, students should be able to register themselves for MGT 490 on Wiser.

If you believe there is a discrepancy with your MAP miles (posted, or total number required) on CMWeb, please email MapCM@umb.edu

Comments Off on HOLD on a minute!

HOLD on a minute!

Registration for the Fall 2014 semester starts on April 1 for students with 100+ credits (and continues to open for all students throughout April); and registration for summer 2014 courses opens for ALL students on April 1.

Before you can register, there are several things you should do, including meeting with an advisor and being sure all of your holds are removed. A hold is something that can prevent you from making changes to your registration or enrolling in classes for a future semester. There are several types of holds that might be on your account, including:

– Advising hold (you must meet with your advisor in the University Advising Center to have this removed)
– Bursar or Financial hold (see the Bursar’s Office about any billing issues that might have prompted this hold)
– Emergency Contact hold (you are the only person who can remove this! Just update your emergency contact information on Wiser each semester to lift this hold)
– Immunization hold (see Health Services about removing this type of hold)
– Library hold (please see the Library to learn more about why this hold might be on your record)
– Parking Ticket hold (see the Parking and Transportation Office about these)

To see if you have any holds, log on to Wiser, go to the Student Center page, and check the blue side menu on the right. One box will say “Holds” and list any that you might have. Holds can go onto your account at any time, so you should check here periodically.

You are encouraged to remove these NOW, so that when your registration appointment arrives, you can enroll in Summer or Fall 2014 classes with as few obstacles as possible.

Comments Off on Test Before the Rest

Test Before the Rest

As you start to think about your schedule for the upcoming term, you should also be sure that you have completed all necessary placement exams.

If you plan to take a BC course (either BC 230 or BC 290), you will need to take the College of Management Writing Assessment (CMWA).

If you plan to take your first math course at UMB, or your first math course in over a year, you will need to take the Math Placement Exam (MPE). Your MPE results will expire within a year, so if you took the test, but did not take a course, a more than a year has passed, you’ll need to retest.

If you plan to take a foreign language course, you may also need to take a placement exam. It is wise to consult with the department offering the language to assess if you need a test, and which test to take, especially if you have any previous experience of any kind with the language. If you are specifically interested in the Spanish Placement exam, please visit this site.

The CMWA, MPE and Spanish placement exams are offered through the UMass Boston Testing Center.
