It’s less than three months until our commemorative event in September and we are making great progress on our program plans. Join us for our next meet-up on Friday, June 28, 2019, at UMass Boston to learn about our latest developments.

We will kick off our meeting with a ‘sneak preview’ of our digital progress — that is, our timeline, story map, and project database. We will share our progress with the auto-generated striker bios and our thoughts on next steps for our volunteers to help edit and finalize these stories. We will continue our discussion of how to create video/audio recordings and share some easy instructions/guidelines.  We will discuss the idea of setting up a ‘show and tell’ table at the event and suggestions for volunteers to help coordinate this table.

We will also update you on progress regarding the upcoming stages of the project (reviewing/closing, data entry, biographical profiles, and planning for the September event), and will answer your questions and general research needs.

At the end of the session, we invite you to join us in walking over to the Tawa Music Classroom in University Hall for the first rehearsal of the choral group that will be singing a song as part of the event. We would love to have you lend your voice, or just pop in to hear what the grand finale will sound like!

Please note that we will be meeting in the CALLI room location: Healey Library, 4th  floor.

All current volunteers are welcome, including those in the process of taking the online training course. Coffee and light refreshments will be served.

Directions to campus are available here, and a campus map is available herePLEASE NOTE: The exterior stairs from the plaza up to Healey Library are CLOSED. Please access Healey Library through the catwalk system.

Do you ever wonder what else was going on in Boston in 1919? What was daily life like for our strikers? Join us for our next meet-up on Friday, May 17, 2019, at UMass Boston to learn about the events that shaped the city and the strike.

We will kick off our meeting with a brief description of the commemoration event to be held on Saturday, September 7, 2019, at UMass Boston, then spend a few minutes trying our hand at recording our thoughts about the project (video/audio) in preparation for the event.

Please join us to hear UMass Boston public history graduate students’ proposals for supplementing the online database that the project team is preparing for the strike’s centennial on September 9, 2019.

This spring, the graduate students in Dr. Jane Becker’s History 625 seminar in public history interpretation developed new material for the 1919 Boston Police Strike project website. Their practicum projects included mapping locations throughout the city where the strike took place, collecting personal stories and family memories from descendants, and researching how the strike was commemorated among policemen and in the popular press over the past one hundred years. In addition, each of the students wrote two biographical essays of strikers based on the crowd-fueled research that our team of community volunteers has conducted. At this event, the students will share their ideas for presenting this work on the project website.
