Project REACH's Community Garden

Project REACH’s Community Garden

A small group of students in the Pre-Collegiate Program Project REACH help the community by building a garden in the park. The garden ties in with the program’s academic curriculum since students read the novel Seedfolks. Seedfolks is a short novel written by Paul Fleischman that describes the transformation of an empty lot into a vibrant community garden and how the characters each experience their own transformations. The novel also describes giving back to the community, which is what the Project REACH counselors and teachers hope to show their students. According to one of the counselors, “We like the students to see how a simple thing, like a garden, can bring their community closer together. That is why we have this garden and that is why we read Seedfolks.”
