Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Beacon Project?

Project Beacon SEAS is funded by the Department of Education with the goal of recruiting, training, mentoring, and retaining school-based mental health providers from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Project Beacon seeks to address the need for school-based mental health providers, while simultaneously increasing access & supports for historically marginalized students who are pursuing careers in school-based mental health services.

Can I apply first to become a Beacon Fellow and then apply to the program?

Interested candidates may apply to their program of choice at the same time they are applying to the Beacon Fellowship. Project Beacon leadership will work to notify accepted Beacon Fellows by March 15th, so that applicants can make an informed decision regarding program acceptances.

Who is eligible to become a Beacon Fellow?

We are looking for passionate advocates for historically marginalized youth who also have a diverse cultural/linguistic background. All prospective students regardless of residency status are welcome to apply. Please visit the Beacon Fellowship page for more information.

What are the responsibilities of a Beacon Fellow?

Fellows commit to attending monthly mentorship meetings and Project Beacon professional development opportunities throughout their programs of study. Fellows agree to complete their internships at one of our partner school districts (Brockton, Lawrence, or Quincy). Finally, Fellows agree to work in a high-needs district for 4 years post-graduation.

What happens if I don’t’ fulfill my responsibilities for this program?

This will be a case-by-case decision. Generally, if Beacon Fellows graduate but do not choose to work at a high-need school district, they won’t be able to receive a letter of recommendation from the program.
