Career Services: Summer 2018 Updates

Career Services: Summer 2018 Updates

Extended summer advising hours with Career Specialist Bill Farrick have come to an end for this summer. We know a lot of students appreciated having this option, and we hope to revisit it again in the Fall 18 semester.

Bill will be out on a short medical leave until the end of August. We wish Bill a healthy and speedy recovery!

Students can schedule an appointment with Deborah Federico, Associate Director for Career Education in Bill’s absence. Deb has worked with our College of Management students in the past and we are happy to have her available over the summer for our students once again.

MBAMKT680     Entrepreneurship in the U.S. and China
June 13 – June 28, 2018, Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu

The Program
China, now home to over 1.3 billion people and the world’s second-largest economy, has become increasingly important as a market for, and source of, goods and services in all sectors. 21st-century managers need to understand the risks and benefits of doing business in China. In an ever-more globalized world economy, managers at all levels need to understand different ways of doing business in dissimilar cultures and adopt the “best practices” in marketing, finance, and operations from around the world.

This course will offer students an in-depth look at how business is conducted in China, the impact of Chinese culture on business practice, and potential business opportunities there. In about two weeks, we will visit two “capital” cities and one northeastern city in China: Beijing, the current Chinese capital and the political and cultural center of the country; Chengdu, the most innovative and dynamic city with rich culture and natural resources in the western region of China; and Shanghai, the financial capital and one of the most dynamic cities in the world at the moment. During our visit in China, besides the unique cultural tours (such as Great Wall and Forbidden City in Beijing, panda center in Chengdu), we will visit Chinese and multinational corporations in different industries and interview the executives of those corporations. This course will be taught by UMass Boston Professor Raymond Liu who successfully led the class in China for the last 13 summers.

Academic Credit

Participants can earn three elective credits in the UMass Boston MBA Program. This course will count toward a specialization of your choice (depending on the topic of your final project) and will satisfy the International Business requirement. In addition, all the students who assign this course can earn three more credits by taking an independent study course with Professor Raymond Liu

Program Fee
The tentative program fee, exclusive of your airfare, will be $3,220 (3 credits) or $3,870 (6 credits- Main Course + Independent Study).

The fee will be split into 2 payments:

  1. Tentative Logistics Fee: $1,750. This fee is payable to the travel vendor. (Details will be forthcoming).
  2. Tentative Tuition Fee: $1,470 (3 credits); add $650 for the additional 3 credits. ). This fee is payable to

UMass Boston in early June.

The $1,750 fee will cover housing, meals, guest speakers, group-sponsored city transportation, and tour tickets in China.  The fee does not include insurance, visa application fee, or transportation between the U.S. and China.

Application Deadline
Because of the nature of the course, the class size is limited to 20. We will review applications on a first come first served basis up to March 30th. However, early applications are strongly encouraged as flight tickets will be very expensive if booking later.

The advancement of technologies has disrupted and influenced most of the industry verticals. One of such a profound impact is on education especially how the digital is transforming the today’s learning and lays the foundation for rising tailored needs of different learners’ segments. It is critical for any digital learning providers to understand different segments of learners, their attitude towards e-learning platforms and objectives so that they can better serve the learners in an effective manner. This paper is an attempt to identify learners’ , who are in current workforce, attitude toward online courses, measure how much learners have used online courses for their education, determine which reasons learners used online course and identify the barriers of why learners have not taken online courses and the likeliness that learners would take online courses in the future. The data collection is a result of an online survey fielded to a randomly selected list of specific job board users.

Stacie Costa MTO Thesis Defense: Wednesday, September 27th at 4:30pm

Stacie Costa
Title:
DEVELOPING A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK FOR HEALTH CARE OPERATIONS: CHALLENGES AND REMEDIES
Date/Time: Wednesday, September 27th at 4:30pm
Location: A&F Conference Room (M-5-211)
Degree: MBA with specialization: Finance

Abstract:

The United States health care system has reached a turning point where exorbitant costs and uneven care are no longer acceptable.  Costs are rising, and neither hospitals nor insurance companies have any incentive to reduce them as they just try to push costs onto one another.  Reforming the United States healthcare system will require a fundamentally different approach for all parties involved.

The purpose of this thesis is to examine and discuss the major problems plaguing the healthcare industry, specifically involving hospitals and other health care organizations.  Then, potential and actual solutions will be reviewed.  Four major categories for health care challenges and issues are discussed: Payment, Information Systems, Business Strategy, and Operations Management.

Authors and scholars who write about health care challenges often discuss remedies to them.  These potential solutions from the literature are discussed in order to understand their feasibility.

Ultimately, the best way to find out if these potential solutions are viable is to ask someone who deals with these challenges every day.  Many health care administrators, physicians, nurses, and managers were interviewed to see what they thought about the potential solutions.  While many of them agreed with the literature solutions, they also recommended different solutions and offered new findings and insight.

The interviews with health care professionals led to a new framework for change.  Recommendations are then made based on the feedback from these interviews.  No matter which department they work in, these health care professionals unanimously emphasized the need for positive and productive company culture, standardization in all areas, and further staff education as ways to reduce cost.  The results show that these overarching themes will have a major impact on the industry as a whole, regardless of the challenge it faces.
