MBAMKT680     Entrepreneurship in the U.S. and China
June 13 – June 28, 2018, Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu

The Program
China, now home to over 1.3 billion people and the world’s second-largest economy, has become increasingly important as a market for, and source of, goods and services in all sectors. 21st-century managers need to understand the risks and benefits of doing business in China. In an ever-more globalized world economy, managers at all levels need to understand different ways of doing business in dissimilar cultures and adopt the “best practices” in marketing, finance, and operations from around the world.

This course will offer students an in-depth look at how business is conducted in China, the impact of Chinese culture on business practice, and potential business opportunities there. In about two weeks, we will visit two “capital” cities and one northeastern city in China: Beijing, the current Chinese capital and the political and cultural center of the country; Chengdu, the most innovative and dynamic city with rich culture and natural resources in the western region of China; and Shanghai, the financial capital and one of the most dynamic cities in the world at the moment. During our visit in China, besides the unique cultural tours (such as Great Wall and Forbidden City in Beijing, panda center in Chengdu), we will visit Chinese and multinational corporations in different industries and interview the executives of those corporations. This course will be taught by UMass Boston Professor Raymond Liu who successfully led the class in China for the last 13 summers.

Academic Credit

Participants can earn three elective credits in the UMass Boston MBA Program. This course will count toward a specialization of your choice (depending on the topic of your final project) and will satisfy the International Business requirement. In addition, all the students who assign this course can earn three more credits by taking an independent study course with Professor Raymond Liu

Program Fee
The tentative program fee, exclusive of your airfare, will be $3,220 (3 credits) or $3,870 (6 credits- Main Course + Independent Study).

The fee will be split into 2 payments:

  1. Tentative Logistics Fee: $1,750. This fee is payable to the travel vendor. (Details will be forthcoming).
  2. Tentative Tuition Fee: $1,470 (3 credits); add $650 for the additional 3 credits. ). This fee is payable to

UMass Boston in early June.

The $1,750 fee will cover housing, meals, guest speakers, group-sponsored city transportation, and tour tickets in China.  The fee does not include insurance, visa application fee, or transportation between the U.S. and China.

Application Deadline
Because of the nature of the course, the class size is limited to 20. We will review applications on a first come first served basis up to March 30th. However, early applications are strongly encouraged as flight tickets will be very expensive if booking later.

UMass Boston Tobacco Free Campus Policy

Tobacco Free

Tobacco Free
A memo issued from James Overton, Interim Co-Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Robert Pomales, Executive Director, University Health Services outlines the Campus wide Tobacco-Free policy in effect as of January 19, 2016.

For information about Smoking Cessation, resources and support, please visit the UMass Boston University Health Services – Tobacco-Free Living  page.

— Memo Begins–

This memo is to inform you of the implementation of the UMass Boston Tobacco-Free Campus Policy.   This policy will be implemented on January 19, 2016.

There is considerable evidence that concentrations of smoke are harmful to nonsmokers, as well as smokers. Findings of the Surgeon General indicate that tobacco use in any form, active and passive, is a significant health hazard. The University of Massachusetts Boston has a responsibility to its faculty, staff, students, and visitors to provide a safe and healthy environment.

The Tobacco-Free Campus Policy is intended to eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke, provide an environment supportive of tobacco free lifestyles, mitigate the risk of accidental fire, eliminate the health risks associated with expectoration from smokeless tobacco, and eliminate the environmental impact of cigarette litter.

With this action, the University of Massachusetts Boston will join the other four campuses of the UMass System, which have implemented a tobacco-free campus policy.

This Policy applies to anyone within the UMass Boston campus including students, staff, faculty, contractors, and visitors.

Definitions:
Tobacco: For the purposes of this policy, “tobacco” refers to any and all tobacco and/or nicotine products, whether inhaled or ingested, as well as electronic cigarettes.

Policy:

  1. In compliance with state law, the use of tobacco is prohibited in all buildings, including all buildings owned or leased by the University of Massachusetts Boston.
  2. The use of tobacco is also prohibited on all university grounds, including the Bayside property.
  3. The use of tobacco is prohibited inside all university owned or leased vehicles, regardless of location.
  4. Applications for exceptions to this policy may be sought (e.g., for religious celebrations or practices, artistic performances, and smoking research).

The chancellor has appointed a Tobacco-Free Policy Committee representative of students, faculty, and staff to promote the success of this policy. Members include representatives from:

Student Affairs
University Health Services
Faculty Council
Human Resources
Environmental Health and Safety
Undergraduate Student Government

Faculty and staff shall have access to on campus coaching and counseling, including private consultation and group cessation programming, through the University Health Services and through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

The university will develop and fund a smoking cessation program to assist students, faculty, and staff who wish to quit smoking.

For more information about Smoking Cessation, resources and support, please visit the University Health Services – Tobacco-Free Living page.
