The 1919 Boston Police Strike Project aims to document and preserve the stories of the more than 1,130 police officers who were involved in this highly influential labor strike, which had lasting effects in the City of Boston and across the United States.  The project is a collaboration between the Boston Police Department Archives, the University of Massachusetts Boston, the Boston City Archives, dedicated volunteer researchers, and family members of men who participated in the strike.  The centennial event on September 7 will commemorate the men who took part in the strike, honor the families who lived with its aftermath, and celebrate the work of the volunteers in researching and compiling biographical profiles for the striking officers for the benefit of researchers, historians, students, family members, and the general public.

Project volunteers and family members of strikers: participate in the commemoration by sending us a brief video of your memories and stories about your striker ancestor before July 15, 2019. Click here to learn about how easy it is to create and submit a video.

Welcome to the 1919 Boston Police Strike centennial year!

Our next meet-up is scheduled for Friday, February 22, 2019, at UMass Boston, to review the progress of the 1919 Boston Police Strike Project and to share next steps for the coming months. Following on our January meet-up, we will continue to host our volunteer researcher meet-ups on a monthly basis to help support our progress through the research tasks and prepare for the commemorative event in September. It’s an exciting time!

We will also continue our new speaker feature—welcoming those of you who wish to spend a few minutes sharing your interests and experiences. We are very pleased that this month project volunteer Maryellen McDonagh will be our featured speaker. We’ll also present new research tips and tricks, field each others’ questions, and focus more closely on the upcoming stages of the project (reviewing, data entry, biographical profiles, and 2019 culminating event planning).

Please note that we will be meeting in the same location as in the January session: Healey Library, 4th  floor, CALLI room.

All current volunteers are welcome, including those in the process of taking the online training course. Coffee and light refreshments will be served.

Directions to campus are available here, and a campus map is available here.

We look forward to seeing you!
