Veronis' Garden Class

Veronis’ Garden Class

On August 8th, I got to follow Veronis Sanchez, a John Hancock MLK Scholar interning at UMass Boston’s Campus Kitchen. She and a volunteer, Makayla, were in charge of teaching a group of students from the Walter Denny Boys and Girls Club about nutrition and how to garden. The students got a chance to play a game that challenged them on which items can be recycled or composted.  It was very fun to see them being active and also learning at the same time. Veronis stated –“It was a great experience to be able to work with kids that look up to you because I feel that I can get closer to them in more of a personal way.” Veronis also feels that Campus Kitchen has helped her become a more patient person which is a major part of working with kids. Overall, it was a pleasure to cover Veronis’ class and seeing the kids learning more about nutrition through gardening.
