I’m not surprised that they used a snail for this study; snails have very few neurons (less than humans) so it makes easy to see how they learn. Since dopamine is a key chemical produced in storing memories, it must mean that it order for the snails to forget the conditioning they learned the meth had to interfere with their dopamine production (as was found in the study).
Another aspect of the study that I found to be interesting is the fact that the meth exposed snails had the same results show “…up when the snails were tested in the same meth-laced water in which they were trained.” The study said that this could explain why former addicts relapsed once they are in familiar environments. This reminded me of the example that Prof. Ciaramitaro used in class of the drug addict who would do drug in a specific room. Once that person was to get clean and somehow get re-exposed to that room again, they would experience intense feelings of how they used to feel in that room when they used drugs. This could trigger that person to want to do that drug again.

As the previous poster stated, using snails is especially useful due to their large neuronal structures. As we have learned in chapter 8, addictive drugs that act upon endogenous receptors in the brain effect the dopaminergic pathways of the brain. We have discussed in class that dopamine and dopaminergic receptors in the basal ganglia are directly associated with learning and storage of memories. Methamphetamine increases the release and blocks the reuptake of dopamine, leading to high levels of the chemical in the brain. Many hypotheses exist to explain the association between dopamine and instrumental learning. It is clear, however, that dopamine directly effects motivation, feelings of pleasure, and motor control. Subjects that use drugs such as methamphetamine experience feelings of excitement, arousal, and anticipation of reward. Methamphetamine’s ability to release dopamine rapidly in reward regions of the brain therefore logically increases an individual’s ability to learn and remember.
