I’m really bad at creating title names, but “I like Nantucket” is too short so here is this one.

Hi!

My name is Wilkins and I am one of the fortunate students to be at the Nantucket satellite campus this Spring Semester. To be quite honest, I wasn’t expecting to like the idea of being on an island with 10 strangers under one roof. It sounds like a spin-off of some crappy reality series. However, as the weeks have rolled by, the lot of us have become pretty  close. Perhaps Environmental Science attracts like-minded people that care about nature, are nice, sometimes silly, and overall happy. Maybe it could be that Nantucket magic that appears in everything we do here.

That's me! I'm so happy :)

Nantucket has a very close-knit community  that makes events here all the more meaningful. This recent Valentine’s Day, A Safe Place held an awareness event for the “One Billion Rising” Organization. A Safe Place is an organization in Nantucket that provides free services to people who have/are experiencing domestic/sexual violence. Part of the organization includes community outreach events such as the “One Billion Rising”(OBR) event this past Friday. Now, OBR is a global campaign to let survivors/ members within the community break the silence and cultural shame of not being able to talk about domestic/sexual violence.

One Billion Rising Nantucket! Unfortunately, this is the only picture I managed to take at the event. :(

The OBR event in Nantucket had many people from different parts of the island to come together in the name of social justice and awareness that change can only come when you have a community behind you to help you. It was really inspiring to see the Chief of police say a few words on behalf of the police department, followed by a representative of Nantucket High School, followed by all these adorable little girls who wanted to speak in the mic to let the community know they stand up for justice, gender equality, and for those who can’t.

I took this on the Hyline ferry coming back to Nantucket. I left for one weekend and I kind of missed Nantucket while back in Boston. It was a really nice sunset to come back to.

Nantucket is really awesome, and the event I just mentioned is only one event out of the many my new friends and I have encountered here on Nantucket. There’s stargazing, karaoke night, trivia night and more that always have us meeting new members of this wholesome community that cares about each other. Nantucketers really care, and to see members of the community get together for a meaningful cause is inspiring. Maybe Nantucket is better during the winter time because you get to really immerse yourself with the people that are integral to keeping the Nantucket magic alive. On the other hand, the cool February days where I can bike around and go pick up shells on beaches nearby really makes me want to stick around and see the island become even livelier during the summer.

Super-witchy shot of a fallen tree coming out of a frozen pond right by the trail near Squam Swamp.

I’m super glad this experience is going much better than I expected. While classes are a little intense (we only have three weeks to learn a semester’s worth of information for one class), the housemates help each other out with studying and relaxing. We study for a bit in the evening and then we go out to the beach to look at the stars. Overall, I’m so happy I decided to come here for the semester. I would’ve been crazy otherwise!

lots of Nantucket love,

Wilkie V. (also known as Wilkins V.)

That's my face!

P.S.- Here’s a set of pictures of my housemates Morgan and Mike being silly at Nantucket Bookworks, right in Downtown Nantucket.

Aw! hahaha, you two are great.

Aww!

Aww! The cuteness of this picture is too much to bear. This is paws-itively unbearable. Fur real. Ok, I’m finished.
