Harvard University & Harvard Medical School
The GRADUATE SCHOOL of ARTS AND SCIENCES HARVARD UNIVERSITY
The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) grants the Harvard PhD in 57 departments and divisions across the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences (including engineering). GSAS also grants a small number of terminal master’s degree in select fields. It is the only school at Harvard to award the PhD degree.

Meet a representative from the Molecules Cells and Organisms (MCO) PhD program:
About Our MCO Program
The training program in Molecules, Cells, and Organisms (MCO) is the only cross- departmental graduate program of the Cambridge campus of Harvard University. Our goal in establishing MCO was to create a highly collaborative and innovative graduate program that provides the foundation for students to become the next-generation biologists.
The current MCO faculty mentors represent all fields of modern biology, from biophysics, structural biology and microbiology to developmental and regenerative biology, neurobiology and genomics, and are drawn from five departments and two schools. Our collaborating departments include the Departments of Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB), Chemistry and Chemical Biology (CCB), Organismic and Evolutionary Biology (OEB), Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology (SCRB), and Physics in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS).
MCO’s unique approach to the Biological Sciences Ph.D. cultivates versatility as well as depth of expertise by exposing its students to the full spectrum of modern biology. Three eight-week lab rotations in the first year offer students the opportunity to explore divergent fields of scientific research and collaborate with faculty affiliated with five departments, providing an interdisciplinary foundation intended to inform ultimate paths of research.
In addition to lab rotations, students complete a series of rigorous foundation courses as well as two electives. Participation in the MCO Student-Faculty Journal Club and two terms as a Teaching Fellow hone the communication skills and critical thinking vital to a successful career in the sciences. Students take the Candidacy Examination in the second year and conclude their preparatory studies by proposing their dissertation subjects to a committee of faculty members. Candidates devote the following years to full-time laboratory research, completing their dissertation, and earning their doctoral degree by the end of the sixth year.

Harvard University Systems Biology Summer Internship Program
The Systems Biology community at Harvard invites interested undergraduates belonging to groups that are under-represented in the sciences to apply for a 10-week paid summer internship program. Interns will work on research projects spanning many fields of science, from biology (including systems biology, biophysics, bioinformatics and genomics) to applied mathematics and computation. Interns will have the opportunity to learn a range of cutting-edge techniques in the exciting and dynamic research environment at the FAS Center for Systems Biology and the Department for Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School. In addition to a mentored research experience, participants have the opportunity to participate in trips to local research institutes, weekly seminars, lectures by distinguished faculty, and career events designed to augment and enrich their knowledge about scientific research and careers in sciences. Participants must be United States citizens or permanent residents.
