On Thursday afternoon we took a little break from the steamy woods of Grafton to visit the other UMASS field school at Gore Place in Waltham, MA. Drs. David Landon and Christa Beranek from the Fiske Center took some time to show us around the property, a 19th century rural gentleman’s farm and estate, and then showed us their excavations of the greenhouse and one of the gardens on the property. It was really neat to see the difference between the two farms, Sarah Boston’s and Gore Place, which were occupied during the same time period, in the early 19th century.
