The graduate program in Critical and Creative Thinking at UMass Boston invites you to join us for this dialogue-oriented activity related to understanding how our understanding of purpose of graduate study evolves during the time in a program. All are welcome, but the session may be most relevant to those who are continuing students in a graduate program or very recently finished one. Questions to be considered:
—How do our original intentions relate to current realities? What motivated us to apply to and then start a graduate study, and how have those motivations or circumstances changed?
—What is the role of serendipity in graduate work? What are we discovering, or what has surprised us about ourselves — our interests, preferences, and goals — in addition to learning about the subject matter of our program?
—How is the shifting, political, social, and educational landscape shaping our purpose for moving through a graduate study? Are current events and issues changing how our graduate work will help us to address problems and challenges across professional, personal, or community life?
The session will raise these themes and involve a series of short reflective activities and dialogue to help raise insights to help us see the connection between why we started a graduate study, where we are now, and where we might be going from here.
