In this series of dialogues, we consider the role of reflective practice for thinking critically and creatively about work and life. Reflective Practice is relevant to any field and refers to how we make connections between our past experiences and future actions. For each participatory hour-long session, we focus on one theme that represents a common challenge to the reflective practitioner. We use a structured dialogue process to support each participant to recall and make sense of their experience and then develop ideas about where they might change their practices to support their ongoing and future encounters with that challenge.
Theme for October 19, 2023: Reflective Practice for Revisiting Purpose in Our Academic and Career Paths
“I’m wondering about what I have left to offer/gain from this situation.”
Full description of the theme: It has, perhaps, become commonplace at this point in time to notice and reference the fact that significant and frequent change is expected in our work and lives following the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, What, then, are we noticing about our sense of purpose in these recent years, and how are approaches to our current practices being transformed (or finding stability) in this period? In this session, we explore the relationship between revisiting and affirming our purpose and how that process leads to, or follows from, how we do our work and take on other activities. We will use the dialogue process to explore what the reflective practitioner can discover and do through the emerging realities of what it means to work and study.
