Dr. Belleau brings a rich and diverse background to our department.  He received his Ph.D. in Sociology in 2007 from the Institute of Advanced Studies of Latin America at the Sorbonne III University in Paris, France. His dissertation analyzes the indigenous movement in Brazil and explores the relationship between strong social and political structures within groups and their willingness and capacity to absorb modernity.

Before starting on his doctoral studies, he worked extensively in human rights in Brazil and Haiti, including working with indigenous rights organizations in Amazonas and directing a human rights education program in Haiti.

Previously, Dr. Belleau has been Visiting Professor of Modern Latin America at the State University of Haiti, and he has also taught at Holy Cross and at Harvard University.  He has also already taught with great success in our Latin American Studies Program. In his new position, he will be developing curriculum on Brazil as well as Brazil’s transnational connections, including the Atlantic Triangle and the Brazilian diaspora. We are delighted to welcome him back!

The College also honored Professor Susan Mraz, Language Coordinator of the Hispanic Studies Department, for her promotion to Senior Lecturer. Congratulations Susan for an outstanding job!
