Doug Bolender stars on Vikings Unearthed

There have been more than 80 articles about the upcoming PBS/BBC/Nova special:  Vikings Unearthed.  A two-hour program premiering online Monday, April 4 at 3:30 pm EDT. The show will air Wednesday, April 6 on PBS.  Doug Bolender, a research assistant professor in the Anthropology Department and the Fiske Center for Archaeological Research, is featured in this New York Times story about a possible Viking settlement in North America. Watch him talk about his involvement in this  discovery Monday at 3:30 p.m. on pbs.org and Wednesday night at 9 on PBS. Watch the trailer here.

Some of the Vikings Unearthed documentary was filmed on Hegranes in Skagafjörður with members of the SCASS project.  Filming took place at Keflavík and Ás.

Dr. John Steinberg has been a Research Scientist at the Fiske Center since 2006. He received his PhD in Anthropology from UCLA in 1997. Before coming to UMass Boston, John taught at UCLA and California State University Northridge. He is interested in the economic problems of colonization, both in New England and across the North Atlantic. He uses GIS and shallow geophysics to study settlement patterns to understand broad trends over the landscape. In addition to John's New England work, he has been studying the settlement patterns of Viking Age Iceland. John is the director of the Digital Archaeology Laboratory at the Fiske Center.
