I am from a little island located in the south of Japan, and there are lots of wild dolphins around our island. Although I have never done, we have an tourist activity called “dolphin watching,” which is like the whale watch in Boston. The local fishermen run their fishing boats and take some tourists to see the dolphins, but, they warm before leaving, they are not sure if they can find dolphins until they actually go to the sea. Yet, with a quite high probability, they can find dolphins. There is a trick behind this entertainment. The local fishermen regularly feed the dolphins at the same area and when tourists come, they usually go straight to the spots where they feed the dolphin. One fisherman, my father’s friend, told me that dolphins can distinguish the certain sound of a boat from others. Therefore, when they hear the familiar sound of a boat which fed them ahead of time, they spontaneously come to the boat with the expectation of being fed. To me, these dolphins seem like being captive although they are technically wild. They are fed by the fishermen and trained to show up as they hear the sound of the boat. I think it is amazing that dolphins can distinguish the certain sound from others. In this article, the same thing is argued. Dolphins can distinguish those who they know from those who they do not know. Moreover, they can hold the memory for a long time. The article pointed out their social system, which they over time break up with a group and create a new group. If this social system really works on their memory system, they are the same as humans in terms of creating and restoring memories. We, human beings, are also actively changing our social relationships with others – meet new people and stop communicating with some people. Even though the relationship ends, we still keep the memory of the people in some places of our brain. This happens to dolphins, which, I though, was amazing. However, dolphins and elephants are not only the spices that continuously change their social environments. Thus, I think the dolphins’ sophisticated memories are not only because of their social system. Their brain structures are somehow more complex than we think so that they can keep memories for a long time and distinguish a sound from others. This is my consideration.
