Career Paths in Public History

The major public history professional organizations offer resources for emerging professionals and others in the field.  In the summer of 2020, the Joint Task Force on Public History Education and Employment—a collaboration of  the American Association for State and Local History, the American Historical Association, the National Council on Public History, and the Organization of American Historians—released “Career Paths in Public History.” This report on the careers of public historians who received their graduate degrees between 1985 and 2017 is a unique and rich assessment of public careers based on a survey with almost 1500  responses, mostly from the years after 2007.

The Task Force’s 2017 report, “What Do Public History Employers Want?,” is also useful for students and early professionals.
