20th Anniversary Reflection. OLLI’s Writing Special Interest Group went to work in the spring of 2019 to create a publication of members’ poems, essays, and stories. Written works were solicited, edited, and published in Mosaic 2020, which debuted at the January 2020 Facilitators’ Luncheon. OLLI member and editor Hugh Stringer wrote the following reflection on the creation of Mosaic 2020:
“Mosaic 2020 shows that the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts. In this case, the whole is the experience of a generation. The parts are poems and stories.
The first words of the first writing in our publication are, “In my dreams, I will …” The last words of the last writing are, “Freedom to be me.” In-between the first and last writings are the stories that express what our experiences taught us. We were born in the New Deal, grew up in Camelot, and reached old age when an Afro-American became president. In the writings that comprise this edition of Mosaic, we express what this experience has taught us. We aspire to entertain and enlighten, to capture a moment and sum up a lifetime.”
A publication entitled Mosaic was published in 2010 in recognition of OLLI’s 10th Anniversary. Copies of Mosaic 2020 are still available in the OLLI office for $10 and will be mailed out to folks wanting a copy when staff can safely return to campus.
