UMB E-mail Accounts
Students will need to activate their student e-mail account, which is automatically generated upon matriculation in the program. Students can find their email address by logging into WISER and going to their “Personal Portfolio” and viewing their “Email Addresses”. All students receive a default email account. This is the email address through which the university and the PhD program will convey important notices and messages. You can have mail sent to this default account automatically forwarded to another email address. To obtain instructions on how to set up email forwarding contact the IT Service Desk. The email system and its Web interface are managed jointly by Information Technology and the Office of the Registrar. Questions regarding your account should be directed to IT Service Desk at 617-287-5220, or send an email to ITservicedesk@umb.edu, or visit the IT Service Desk on the third floor of the Healey Library on campus (mail drop: 090-03-007).

Students are expected to check their university e-mail on a regular basis to ensure they are staying current with all official communications generated by the PhD Program Office. Notifications from CM PhD Programs
The PhD Program Office will send out periodic communications to all College of Management PhD students of items of note, which include registration deadlines, research and conference opportunities, etc. Your UMB e-mail address will be used for all official communication from the School, so please check this regularly (or arrange to have mail forwarded to an e-mail address that is checked regularly.)
IT Services
Location: IT Service Desk, Healey Library, 3rd Floor
Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) offers a wide variety of services that enhance and support teaching and learning for students, faculty & staff. Services for students include access to the WISER (student information system), computer labs for writing and printing reports, using email to stay in touch with campus activities and academic work. Students can also avail of special pricing on the purchase of hardware, software and security software programs. Training on different software applications is also available.
Other popular services offered are wireless access, computer replace program, and access to a suite of software for both academic and administrative applications.

PhD Seminar Room
PhD in Business Administration students have access to study space in Healey Library, during regular hours. This shared space is located on the third floor of Healey Library, the entrance located to the left of the IT Service Desk.
Registrar’s Office

The Registrar’s Office handles all record-keeping for the university, processes applications for graduation, and governs university academic policies. Most services offered by the Registrar’s Office are also offered at the One Stop Center.

Bursar’s Office

The Bursar’s Office is available to process payments, answer questions about tuition and fees, issue refund checks, and handle other financial matters. Most of these services are also offered at the One Stop Center.

University Bookstore

In addition to textbooks, the University Bookstore sells office supplies, apparel, snacks, computer items, and UMass Boston parking passes (see included handout for more on parking). The Office of Student Activities and Leadership is your connection to engagement opportunities outside of the classroom. Student Activities also provides numerous services for the UMass Boston community including: UMass Boston ID cards, ticket sales, and general university information.
Student ID
To get your ID, you must:
- Be a registered student at UMass Boston;
- Have a valid picture ID ready (license, passport, etc) or;
- Three printed proofs of address (utility bills, university correspondence, etc).

Please go to the One Stop on the UL to get it corrected before obtaining your ID.

University Health Services

Our multidisciplinary healthcare team is composed of nurse practitioners, consulting physicians, psychologists, social workers, register nurses, laboratory technicians, and health educations supported by clinical and administrative support staff.
UMass Boston Student Health Fee
The mandatory student health fee is included in the Combined Mandatory Fees which are charged on a per-credit basis. This fee funds a variety of programs offered by University Health Services, including UHS Health Education and Wellness programs and activities and services available through the UHS Counseling Center.
Obtaining Services
UHS General Medicine provides preventive care such as immunization updates, tuberculosis screenings, women’s/men’s health and sports physicals, urgent care for minor illness and injuries, international travel vaccinations and services, infection control and evaluations, and flu shots.
Health Insurance
Massachusetts State law requires students enrolled in 75% of full-time curriculum in any Massachusetts institution of higher education to participate in a school-sponsored qualifying Student Health Program (“SHP”) or an alternate health plan with comparable coverage. Learn more here
Student Health Insurance Plan Waiver : Students who are at least 75% of full time are automatically billed for the Student Health Insurance Plan. Students may opt out of the SHP by completing a waiver indicating that they have comparable coverage under another plan. Learn more here.
Student Health Plan : Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is the current underwriter for the University of Massachusetts Boston SHP. The policy year begins on August 1, 2016. For plan specific information, policy documents or to print a temporary insurance card click here.
Parking
If you plan to park at UMass Boston, be sure to allow yourself time to find a space and walk to your destination on the campus. Remember that traffic may be very heavy, and space may be limited, especially at the beginning of the semester.
The university maintains several parking lots on and near the campus, offering a total of roughly 2,500 spaces.
Public Transportation Passes
The MBTA offers an 11% discount to all students if purchased through UMB Office of Student Activities and Leadership. Discounted passes for the semester must be purchased prior to the start of the semester.
The next opportunity to purchase a discounted pass will be this summer for Fall 2013. Applications will be available this summer.
Prepaid semester, monthly, and multi-park passes are available at reduced rates.
You can buy all prepaid passes at the Office of Transportation Services (Quinn Administration Building, 2nd Floor) or the UMass Boston Bookstore (Campus Center, Upper Level).

The university libraries support the campus’ academic pursuits, providing resources and staff to guide constituents in the complex process of discovery and effective use of informational materials.

Safety on Campus
Note the presence of blue-light call boxes on campus. Use one of these boxes or call 617-287-1212 from a cell phone or 911 from campus phones to report campus violence. Be aware of your surroundings. Call for a Public Safety escort if you feel unsafe on campus. If you observe something—or someone—out of place, trust your instincts and let a member of the Department of Public Safety know about it.
Severe Weather
Be familiar with the university’s inclement-weather policy, posted at http://www.safety.umb.edu. In case of severe weather, monitor http://www.umb.edu or local TV stations for campus closing information. Closing information will also be provided via our Facebook page and Twitter feed. Additionally, many local TV stations offer a text messaging service for campus closing notices. Do not attempt to reach the campus in severe weather if you feel that it is unsafe for you to do so.
“One Stop” office

The One Stop Center is available to help with account inquiries, process payments, assist you with obtaining transcripts, and provide financial aid assistance. Most forms that have been approved by our Graduate Programs staff can also be delivered to the One Stop Center. Many services offered by the Bursar’s Office and the Registrar’s Office are also offered at the One Stop Center.

Office of Disability Services

Any individual with a physical or mental impairment that substantively limits some major life activity, and needs an accommodation, must provide documentation of the disability to the Director of the Ross Center for Disability Services. The Director of Disability Services will determine whether or not accommodation is needed. Once this determination is made, the Director of Disability Services will consult with faculty on appropriate accommodations. A student with disability is encouraged to register with Disability Services (CS 2-2010) or call 287-7430.
