Sean McCanty is an environmental biology PhD student in the Biology Department at UMass Boston working on freshwater ecology and restoration under Alan Christian. His research focuses on an in-progress restoration of disused cranberry agricultural land into a functioning stream/wetland system. McCanty is examining the ecological integrity of the restoration site using both structural and functional aspects of stream ecology, including fish and benthic macroinvertebrate community analysis, alongside geospatial analysis of the surrounding watershed. He hopes to compare less cost-intensive passive restorations to planned active restoration activities on site in order to evaluate the trajectory and eventual stable state of the system and provide insight into the benefit, if any, of active over passive restorations.
