Lillian Glickman has been honored by the Massachusetts Councils on Aging with its Lifetime Achievement Award for more than 50 years of experience in gerontology and work with the Massachusetts aging network.
Glickman, co-director of the Management of Aging Services Masters and Certificate Programs at UMass Boston’s McCormack Graduate School, received the award at the MCOA’s annual meeting.
MCOA Executive Director David Stevens warmly recalled working in close partnership with Ms. Glickman for several years. “I consider Lillian my mentor, a tireless advocate who, for all of her accomplishments, deserves the same respect, admiration, and recognition as legendary elder advocates Frank Manning and Elsie Frank,” he said.
Glickman helped initiate the Management of Aging Services programs at UMass Boston 15 years ago to train managers and future leaders in elder services. It was only the latest chapter in a distinguished career.
From 1998 until January 2003, Glickman served at the Secretary of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs, a cabinet level position. Prior to that, she served as Assistant Secretary for nine years during two separate time-periods.
During her time at Elder Affairs, she worked to increase funding for councils on aging and to expand the range and scope of home care services to maintain elders in the community. She also oversaw the development and implementation of the elder protective services system and the regulation and certification of assisted living facilities.
