Trauma-informed Research Workshop

Doctoral students and professors in the Applied Linguistics Department at Umass Boston participated in Trauma-informed Research Workshop on Monday, March 6, 2023. Emily Lapolice, LICSW, TCTSY-F Psychotherapist, Certified Yoga Instructor, Faculty Member at the Center for Trauma and Embodiment at JRI, and Contributing Author: Embodied Healing: Survivor and Facilitator Voices from the Practice of Trauma Sensitive Yoga led a workshop that taught the students and faculty to support the safe conduct of research with participants and communities who have experienced trauma. It focused on understanding different forms of trauma (including PTSD, Complex Trauma, and Socio-cultural Injustice Trauma) with the goal of developing trauma-sensitivity to facilitate safe conversations and relational exchanges that do not replicate trauma paradigms in ethnographic and interview research. The workshop was “hands-on” to engage questions and experiences of meeting trauma in the field as we explore tools for asking questions and engaging in relationship-building with greater awareness and confidence.
