TAG: Summer 2015

TAG: Summer 2015

This summer, the Talented and Gifted (TAG) Latino program kicks off its 31st year of service to education. TAG is a youth program at UMass Boston that serves students from 7th to 12th grade with a major goal of increasing retention and graduation rates of Latino students in exam schools.

I got the chance to speak with the program’s new director, Tito Lugo-Velez, and he is excited about TAG’s recent focus on diversity. He said, “We have been enrolling students from all over the world. We have students from China, Vietnam, and Somalia. It’s something that I’m proud of, the diversity  of our program, and I’m happy that we have students who respect one another despite the cultural differences between them.”

TAG will continue to follow its renowned curriculum which includes classes like PreCalculus and Algebra, field trips, and their yearly graduation ceremony. The program’s assistant, Nataniel Pimentel, said “I’m looking forward to their final product at the end of the summer, the field trip to Canobie Lake Park, graduation, and all of the other fun activities with the students and staff.”

I am really looking forward to covering this program again this summer. It is my pleasure and honor to welcome them back.
