Mayor’s Office Paid Summer Internship Program

Dates of Internship: June 5 – August 31, 2023

Calling all who want to make Boston a better place to live, work, and thrive! Mayor Wu is looking for interns who want to support her in getting the big things done by doing the small things right. Interns will be able to help shape a stronger, innovative, more equitable Boston. Interns will have the opportunity to:

●        Gain valuable professional experience in local government departments

●        Help the City to deliver exceptional service to neighborhoods and residents

●        Hone and/or find their passion for public service

●        Participate in fun social events with other interns

●        Interact with city officials and civic leaders in Boston

Intern Responsibilities often include but are not limited to:

●        Conducting research; performing public outreach and actively participating in community meetings

●        Drafting press releases, media advisories, and talking points

●        Facilitating written correspondence including proclamations, certificates, and other letters

●        Data entry; planning, attending, and executing events; attending board, council, or commission meetings

●        Working with various internal and external offices and stakeholders at special events

●        Scheduling, attending, scribing meetings across different projects, then reporting back to leadership concisely and comprehensively

●        Demonstrated commitment to developing your professional and interpersonal skills

Preferred Skills

To effectively perform the duties of this role, we seek a candidate with:

●        A high standard of ethics, integrity, and courage

●        Demonstrated communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills

●        Strong writing skills and attention to detail

●        Experience with Microsoft Office and Google Suites

●        A strong organizer who knows how to prioritize time-sensitive work

●        Critical thinking and problem solving

●        Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

●        Senses of humor and urgency

●        Openness to mentorship and a mindset for equity

Minimum Qualifications

●    Aptitude and ability to learn

●    Excitement and curiosity for public service

●    Positive attitude

●    Age 18 or older

Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Integrative and Evolutionary Biology

Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Integrative and Evolutionary Biology

The REU Program at UMass Boston will open its applications for summer 2023 in late fall 2022.

The summer 2023 REU program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to:

  • Carry out an independent research project in biology.
  • Work closely with a faculty advisor and research group.
  • Develop research skills, include computational, analytical, and/or laboratory skills
  • Explore issues related to research such as science ethics and communication
  • Exchange ideas with students at weekly seminars.

Program Dates: This program runs from June 5 to August 11, 2023.

Location: The campus is south of downtown Boston on a peninsula extending into scenic Boston Harbor.

Stipend: Participants will receive $9,300 for the 10-week period, which includes a stipend of $6,000, plus a room and board allowance of $3,300. 

Eligibility: Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States and must be enrolling in college for the fall of 2023. Students who will graduate by June 2023 are not eligible to apply. Applicants should have completed at least one semester of college-level biology. Students from minority groups underrepresented in science and students from primarily undergraduate institutions are especially encouraged to apply.

Application due date: Applications will be accepted until February 15, 2023.

  • Virus evolution & transmission
  • Regulation of meiosis
  • Circadian rhythms, mRNA regulation, and metabolism
  • Ecological genomics of plants
  • Neurobiology of vision
  • Evolution of mRNA regulation in stem cells 
  • Developmental genetics in zebrafish
  • Cell signaling in Drosophila
  • Ecology & evolution of insect herbivores
  • Amphibian microbiome & disease ecology
  • Marine coastal ecology

Youth Wellness Corps Fellowship– Apply Now!

YOUTH WELLNESS CORPS FELLOWSHIP

We are looking for students majoring in diverse science disciplines to participate in a summer full-time summer internship program in community based organizations. Participants will receive a $5,000 summer stipend with the possibility to receive $3,000 during the Fall 2022. Fellowship begins July 16 and concludes September 3.

Requirements:

-UMass Boston undergraduate students

-Must have a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA
