Iceland is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world right now, and it’s easy to see why. With its unique landscape, unique culture and unique cuisine, you’ll be sure to find many reasons to fall in love with Iceland when you visit. However, your trip isn’t going to be complete unless you add these places to your itinerary. Here are those places you don’t want to miss when visiting Iceland.

Reykjavik

If you are visiting Reykjavik, you should not miss the Hallgrimskirkja church. This church is the tallest building in Reykjavik and it offers a great view of the city. Another place to visit is Perlan, which is an observation tower that provides panoramic views of downtown Reykjavik and Mount Esja.

Thingvellir National Park

Few destinations compare to the natural wonders of the Earth’s own island, which can best be seen in Thingvellir National Park. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a geological wonder where you will find lava formations, geothermal springs and impressive waterfalls that are sure to wow. Best of all, all types of vacation packages in Iceland are available at discounted rates if you book in advance.

Vatnajökull National Park

While many people visit Iceland to see the Northern Lights, Vatnajökull National Park is a must-see destination that you won’t want to miss. This national park is home to the largest glacier in Europe and covers an area of over 8,000 square kilometres. In addition to magnificent scenery, you’ll find plenty of opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing in this area.

Geysir

The Geysir is the original named hot spring, and the word comes from the Icelandic verb geysa, meaning to gush. The Geysir is located in Haukadalur Valley and is one of the major attractions in Iceland. It usually erupts once every 4-8 hours. The water can shoot up to 40 metres high.

Hvítárvatn

Everyone has their own favourite place in Iceland, but there are a few that should be on everyone’s list. One of the most popular places is Hvítárvatn. This geothermal lake is located near Krafla and Grjotagja ́ Cave. It is mostly known for its vibrant colours which can vary from green to blue to red depending on the time of year.

Dettifoss

The second largest waterfall in Europe, Dettifoss is an awe-inspiring sight. It’s located in the Jökulsárlon glacier lagoon in Northeast Iceland and you can take a boat to get up close. Hikers should be aware that you’ll have to cross a river on foot as well as negotiate slippery rocks, so make sure you’re wearing appropriate footwear.

One of the most popular attractions in Iceland, Geysir is constantly erupting with geothermal water.

Seljalandsfoss

The first stop on my list of things to do in Iceland is Seljalandsfoss. This waterfall is one of the most visited waterfalls in Iceland and for good reason. It has a steep cliff so you can go right up to it and feel the power of the water crashing down. The best part about Seljalandsfoss is that it’s only 40 minutes from Reykjavik, making it an easy day trip from the city centre.
