This article is very interesting. Many times you hear that it is not good to play video games a lot, because they are not educational, they are violent, or they are just a waste of your time because you should be doing other things such as reading. When playing video games it requires full attention, multitasking and fast thinking. In most video games you have to be able to make decisions on the spot, and be able to think and make decisions while controlling it with your hands. The article states, “We transferred the benefit from inside the game to different cognitive abilities.” Playing video games can give a person a feeling of achievement while having fun, but studies show that aside from those reasons of playing, video games also can help with cognitive abilities such as multitasking, memory and can have a positive impact on your thinking. I also found it interesting that after testing, the participants showed improvements in their abilities, and had an easier time remembering names and multitasking.

I also find this article really interesting. It is similar to to concept used in may older folks homes and hang outs where the elderly play different games to help keep their mind sharp, like memory (matching), gossips, and trivial pursuit. Something that the article does mislead is when it says “video games may offset or even reverse the negative effects of aging on seniors’ brains” the study does not actually prove any reverse of deterioration. But rather shows that with use the elder person’s brain is still capable of great things. I think it is more along the lines of “use it or loose it” where they are now using their mind more frequently and complexly with multitasking.
I am really glad to see that they are still working on this. It is an improvement from an earlier similar study done in 2008.

This article is appealing, especially pertaining to our current focus on the mechanisms of executive control as well as maintenance through utilization of the phonological loop and visuo-spatial sketchpad.

I truly enjoyed reading this article because I actually have my mom play video games with me at times. I once read a study that stated that video games improved hand-eye coordinations. The study studied surgeons and how gaming helped them have more accruacy and success during operations. I can see how video games can improve hand-eye coordination because to do a simple task, such as walking, your required to move different buttons at the same time making you multi-task. When my mom, whose 64, first started playing videos games I noticed how she was all over the place. As time past she started becoming more accurate with her movements. Becoming better at the game my mom would get happy and as she would say “make her feel young again”.
I hope to hear more about this study as well as know if there are specfic games that should be played or if any game would help improve these skills.

I wasn’t at all surprised by the results of this study. I have heard before that seniors who take part in mental activities can prevent dementia. Many of these mental activities include seniors in playing games similar to what this study had it’s participants do. It is like what was discussed in class, “if you don’t use it, you lose it.” As with the case on dementia, seniors begin to lose memories/skills which they had previously. Obviously once you get dementia you cannot reverse it’s effects but you can train your brain to retain information and thus prevent diseases that affect memory from occurring. But in this study the mental activity (video game) that these senior partook in was very complex in nature but not something like GTA; they had to steer a car with their left hand while shooting down signs with their right hand. This type of game would be more likely be retained in the brain than a simple one because it require the brain to be more active. This is obviously the case because the seniors were sill able to perform well even after not being exposed to the game for six months.
I think that this video game will be a great tool used to improve the memory skills of seniors.

This article is very interesting. It is a great reminder that video games make an impact on any age. My parents play video games on their iPhones and I think it certainly helps with their memory and multitasking skills. Even having a smartphone helps their brains active; they are always wanting to learn new things on their phones and are constantly asking me how to do certain things. When I read this passage I was shocking because it’s hard to believe that video games are benifits for us. Especially for older people like seniors, as most people think that when people are getting older their brain ability will be degenerate and it will be difficult for them to focus on on thing. However, as this passage points out videos games actually brings more advantages to seniors rather than its negative influences. The researchers find out the brain waves are booming in seniors and they performed even much better than other people like young adults. In the class we have learnt about brain cognitive skills. Like the book mentions, “Psychologists usually associate cognitive skills with the ability to reason and solve problems or to perform tasks that require sorting through large amounts of knowledge.” That is to say, cognitive skills can be trained and the better way to do that is through video games, seniors are trained by games so that their problem solving ability can be stronger. In some ways, videos games really provides more space for senior people to think about and to figure out what they can do. But there are still more points to find out about the advantages video games can give to the human beings.

Articles such as this one tend to be overlooked when discussing the controversy of video games. The media usually focus on children claiming to be imitating violent video games. This causes the cognitive benefits, as discussed in this articles, to not be included when discussing video games. When simplified, it really comes down to the activity itself that is providing benefits. When the game provides tasks and activities that stimulate the brain and show increased neuronal activity, the controversial content can be overlooked. The study showed the seniors playing the game after four weeks tested higher than young adults. Any additional method to reverse the negative effects of aging is highly sought after in society. Benefits such as this need to be brought to light, not just the violent content in certain games.

This article is particularly interesting to me because the idea of video games helping older people is something that most would think is crazy. It’s so interesting that it even improved some so much that they out did the people who were in the their 20’s. This article struck me the most because my younger cousin had a stroke while he was still in the womb and the left side of his body is much slower than his right. He doesn’t use it often and has to go to therapy. He is an avid videogame player and he now is starting to use his left hand. His physical therapist says that him playing video games will do nothing but improve the use of his left hand. So reading this article and the fact that it can help people improve mental abilities and “retrain the brain” as the article says, is not at all surprising to me.

this article grabbed my attention from the get go. It seems as though this day and age video games are becoming more and more of the “problem” rather than a solution to something. People do not realize the coordination and skills it takes to tackle an in depth video game it makes perfect sense that participating in a video game would sharpen the brain, it would be interesting to see if the older group could beat out the group in there even if the 20 year old group were being trained as well.

I find this article interesting because I feel like young adults like me can relate to this article. Just like the other blogs, I to was shocked at how games would be an impact on how adults move and react. I would thought staring at the screen would give elders a headache or have a change in their eyesight but from the experiment, I was wrong. Most elders move at a slow pace and to hear how they were able to multitask and have fast reflexes in the game, makes me want to let my grandparents keep playing so they can use that experience outside in the real world.

I must agree with the article because an increase in neuronal activity can reinvigorate the affected areas such as the frontal, parietal and medial cortex. Like Agus, I believe that “video games” are very powerful. While certain games are often recognized for negatively influencing youth, it’s nice to see that others have positively impacted the lives of seniors. These findings did not surprise me very much, considering that my grandmother has always enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and explaining exactly why she does them. As the article says, this study emphasizes “how plastic the older brain is.” By making a senior familiar with playing a video game, which is an open skill, his or her concentration, multi-tasking abilities, and cognitive abilities show signs of improvement. However, it is still unclear exactly how video games affect different brain processes, which is why I believe neurologists should consider designing a game that targets a specific part of the brain (e.g., a game of timing specifically testing the cerebellum).
