This article in particular was especially fascinating for me, having had a schizophrenic cousin who commit suicide years back. The disorder is incredibly crippling and one that needs immediate treatment for one to function overall, unlike more mild disorders that can be treated or at least managed with behavioral therapy alone. The new findings suggesting this could be due to a lack of the brain protein calcineurin is big news in my opinion. With an illness as severe and complex as this, it’s no news that finding a source for it is ideal and could lead to targeting how to efficiently manage, or even cure, it.
I can’t help but try to reason why the neuronal activity is so strong during resting periods rather than during the activity itself, could it be that the lack of calcineurin creates an effect opposite of what it should be doing? The disorganization the rats experienced reminds me of the discussion in class we had about disorientation and being unable to recognize one’s surroundings…perhaps the lack of neuronal activity when it was NEEDED versus when it wasn’t hindered their ability to make use of place cells, thus creating disorganization.
I’m looking forward to future studies on the topic.
