  1. In adulthood I find it highly unlikely that a regular nap is possible. With the possibility of work, school, friends, family, and relationships I do not think the concept of napping on a regular basis is realistic. So I feel that this study is interesting but has no real applications for adults unless they plan to change the way people live their lives entirely (though that might be a good idea).

  2. I have difficulty accepting this study without having a clear understanding on how it was designed; therefore, in my eyes, it loses some validity. Also, how did they choose these 40 preschoolers? Was it at a specific school? Was it from multiple schools? Were the two groups randomly chosen? 40 is a small number for a research study, because then you only have 20 in each group. There is lots of room for variables that may not be mentioned here. As for if it is beneficial for adults, I do not think that you can infer a conclusion based on a different study group. In order to make a valid statement on whether or not it is beneficial for adults, it would require an entirely different study.

I do agree with the person above, that in adulthood napping is not very practical, but mostly in the more westernized cultures. Places where the time culture is more laid back it may perhaps be a very viable option.

  3. I found this study to be very informational. I don’t always immediately associate napping with improved learning and academic performance but it makes sense. Looking back I can recall times I had been burnt out studying or doing homework and allowed myself to take a short nap. After the nap I was able to remember and perform better in the subjects I was studying. However, I can also remember times when I didn’t nap as frequently that a nap left me feeling more out of it and groggy than I had before laying down. Unfortunately with my schedule as an adult regular naps are not an option for me but the research is still interesting. These findings will be helpful in the future if I decide to have kids in the emphasis of how important napping and rest is to their overall learning. Hopefully at some point in my future adult lift I will have a schedule that can accommodate regular napping and I will be able to put this theory to test.

  4. This is actually a common argument in my country, Japan. As some of you many know, Japanese often take a short nap anywhere at school and work, and even on the bus and train. Since we are more likely to work hard without taking a long vacation than people in other countries (one research by ODCE shows Japanese work longer than any other developed countries), most of us tend to believe nap, especially so-called “Power nap,” helps us stay physically and mentally healthy. Although this article is written in Japanese (http://matome.naver.jp/odai/2137663845548659901), it basically introduces positive aspects of napping based on the researches by professors in the universities in America. Napping provides people a better creativity, increases the level of concentration and memory, reduces the risk of heart attack and so on. And personally, I believe napping helps us mentally and physically. In this blog entry, it is stated at the end “That suggests to Spencer that as the children’s brains mature, perhaps they do not depend on the nap to consolidate their memories.” However, I think napping still helps adult learn things new. Perhaps the way nap helps adul learn is the different way to help children’s, yet as we learn in class, spaced practice lead to learn the long-term memory, and nap plays the same role of sleeping at night. In short, having a nap as they are learning, they can make space between learning one thing and recalling what they learn before the nap. That helps form a long-tern memory, Therefore, napping is right habit for people to increase their leaning abilities.

  5. I agree completely with this post. A nap “does the brain good”. I remember when I was younger, I use to help out with the preschoolers aiding them to take their naps. when they woke up I would as them how was school, what did they learn etc. , not only were they able to recall what they had learned hat day but they were also rejuvenated In a way as if that nap was needed more than anything. I too decided experiment on myself. I studied a bit using flashcards for this class and then took a nap woke up and studied again. I realized that I knew a lot more. its almost as if you’re “pausing” while taking the nap and then when you wake up its you’re reminded what was being studied so you don’t lose what you learned its still there.

  6. i find that it’s a good thing to get regular naps but it might be impossible if you’re in school or working, cause if you think of it, if your in school, you can’t really nap cause there’s no room or place to take naps and you also have to get to class. Then if your at work, it’s going to be the same thing without room or place to take naps, and you also have to get at work. So I agree with f01242425 saying “that napping on a regular basis is not realistic” even though its sounds like a good study and a good thing to do for both preschoolers and adults.

  7. I think this article raises a lot of really good points, but to me felt that the results weren’t fully convincing because there is no clear direction in how these kids were selected and what the material consisted of. There are a lot of confounds to this experiment, such as had the children seen these matches before or had other exposure that would help in recalling them? I agree with victoriamarinell001, when she commented on the study’s validity and their results. There have been other studies that I’ve read regarding the positive nature of napping and learning but I felt that this study in particular could have been done better. Perhaps studying preschoolers wasn’t the best idea, because at that age they are constantly learning new things based on their observations of the people around them, not usually in a formal academic setting as higher grade schoolers do. I also feel that regualr napping in adults would be more difficult to accomplish as stated in several of the other comments for similar reasons.

  8. I don’t think we can really judge the validity of this study based on this popular article. Unless you’ve read the actual scientific journal entry, validity can’t really be called into question. In my mind, the results seem valid in light of what we know about sleep. We know that sleep is a time in which the brain consolidates, reviews, and stores information acquired throughout the day. If naps become a consistent part of your routine, it makes sense that the brain adapts and uses this time to record and store information just acquired. However, as the study suggests, without that behavior being consistent, the brain doesn’t utilize nap time for storage and consolidation. Instead, it appears that the body’s Circadian rhythms really have strong control over when and how memories are stored. If sleeping in the middle of the day becomes a real part of your daily routine, then it follows that the brain uses that break time efficiently.

  9. This article definitely provided a few good points. I know, from my personal experience, that a nap has always done me some good when I’ve had a very stressful day and needed to get re-energized. However, finding the time for even a little 20-minute cat nap seems difficult these days, and I know most adults have this problem because of work, school, etc., so this study seems to have too high of expectations for those with this type of lifestyle.

Also, I agree with the lack of validity in this study. There are no details as to which school these preschoolers came from, how they were selected, etc. Therefore, there is not enough convincing going on in the article.

I do agree, though, that it does provide some good points. However, it does not seem very realistic for many adults and students, and the data that the article actually provides is not enough to prove its validity.

  10. As nanny and aunt of five nephews I completely agree with the benefits of naps. And as a college student, giving myself time to relax and sleep I also agree with the benefits of naps. I took the professors advice when studying, taking a power nap during the study session and I found myself remembering a lot more and I wasn’t dozing off every two minutes. As a nanny of a kindergartner who now doesn’t take naps in school, I notice many different mood and memory changes. He is more irritable and never remembers what he did in class that day which is very odd.

  11. I think this article is very interesting and brings up some good points, however I agree with what most people here are saying: that it can’t really be that valid, since the study group is so small and it’s unclear in which way they selected their test and control groups, or in which direction this study was taken it. I think some more details need to be given in order for us to see that it is indeed a valid find, and that there aren’t underlying factors effecting the conclusion of this article.
With that being said, I do however think it is very possible for this to be true in children. I myself have previously worked in a pre-school classroom of about 25 students for a little over two years. Through my time spent in the classroom, I did notice a significant increase in the way children remember the lessons they are being taught when they are given a nap midday, versus when they do not. What’s especially interesting to be about this is that someone is even trying to make this connection, as I’ve noticed that the pre-school teacher I used to work with simply thought of napping as a behavioral mechanism to get the children to calm down.
As others said, I also agree that it’s not really fair to make an assumption about how this effects adults when this study hasn’t been done on adults. As we all know by now, an adult’s brain is so much more developed than a child’s. It’s an entirely different study group.

  12. The article posted was very informative, however it did focus its strength dominantly around toddlers and children. There seemed to be no study information regarding adults. It does make sense though that if adults should benefit from napping, that the naps would have to be done consistently to not disrupt the overnight sleeping pattern. It is understandable that children benefit from afternoon naps, because their brains are still in development and so when they learn and then take a brake and nap, there are no outside stimuli entering the brain and it has time to “digest” the information it has received thus far. All in all a very interesting study. I enjoyed reading it.

  13. The content of this article is very fascinating but I will have to disagree with the way the overall experiment was conducted. The experiment ignored all the other factors that can contribute to how the children absorb information. there are fast learners and slow learners, basing the experiment only on naps shows a big difference between children who are quick learners and the ones who takes time to learn what was been showed. I know for a fact the benefits of napping for the adult will include include improvement in awareness, better relaxation, better memory, less confusion or even in some cases less accidents .
Contrary to how brain of the a child functions, the child’s brain is still in development so they do not experience most of the fatigue and stress the adult brain does .so I do agree with Spencer about he quote “I think for adults napping can be beneficial if you do it regularly,” Spencer said. “It’s when you’re not doing a regular nap that it can actually interrupt the quality and quantity of your overnight sleep.” This is a stronger point made but in relation to the children taking naps. The experience should have taken into the consideration the IQ levels of these children. The way human absorb information differs from one another. It is hard to logically attribute a child’s success due the the amount of naps he/she takes. What i was looking for was an experiment over the years for children who have been taking naps for instance from middle school to high school then measured the progress they made as compared to same children of the same age range who skipped naps.
It is an interesting article but the way the experiment was conducted to me doesn’t make napping better for kid’s to learn.

  14. I believe that naps are extremely useful when involved with the learning process. From the early days of Psych 101 it has been taught that the brain works to encode information from the sensory memory and it most information is transferred to the short-term memory. But for most information a good night sleep or rest helps transfer those learned skills and facts to long-term memory. Though there is a significant difference in naps of young children compared to naps in adulthood, they fundamentally should work the same. Though there is no specific data to support this hypothesis it could be a future theory. The issue that many adults in today’s society face is finding the time to take a sufficient nap, because too short of a nap can sometimes just put a person in more unrest while too long of a nap takes away from a person’s productivity. In conclusion overall the effects of napping can be debated either way but essentially it comes down to that particular person who is napping to get positive or negative effects.

  15. As others have already said, napping would be ideal yet unrealistic in an adult’s everyday life. I agree with the article, in that napping is good your brain. sleeping encodes what you learn, and so on. Most people could not fit in time. I can speak for the unrealistic aspect of it, personally. I am enrolled in 5 classes and work at least 40 hours a week. Finding time to even think about things other than work and school is near impossible for me. I understand that most people do not have my schedule, but I do feel that at least some can relate. My point: if I could find time to nap, I would absolutely take up the offer, as this study suggests.

  16. based on the article, i fell like its important to take a nap because its better to retain information that use just receive. In adults it can be a little difficult but taking nap can be beneficial.
