Summary:
The article argues that technology is changing the way we thinks and the way our brain works. The problem at hand was that the author Nicholas Carr was having trouble concentrating on reading even when it’s for a short period of time. He found out that a lot of his friends and peers are having the same problems he does. Even though they are all scholars the problem and shouldn’t have those problems but they do. He concluded that technology is the cause of that problem because since we have technology we have been relying on it more and more everyday. Instead of hours or days of research, it could be cut in to minutes of research by just typing into a computer and the results would be popping up right away. We think that this is just a way we could save time but the author argues that this make our brain less smart sure we get more knowledge and information that way but the brain is not exercise so that it could work at its best capacity. Instead of reading, and thinking critically, we basically only read to collect information nowadays. No one really enjoy reading a random article, or book anymore. He continues the article by giving examples of where people rely on technology in history. When Frederick Winslow Taylor designs the machines in his factory to work at the best capacity along with his worker he commercialize that method. Every manufactures start searching for the best method to do a task and makes everyone do it that way. He thinks that it’s going to be the way of the future and he isn’t wrong. Now everyone is doing the same thing and the author fear that everyone is going to turn out to be almost the same person. He has that fear because most of the world get the same source of information and that’s Google, and Google’s biggest project is to make artificial intelligent connect to our brain so everyone would get the same information and search for information the same way. It would improve everyone brain and that would make everyone turn out the same. The author thinks that the old way gives everyone an endless way to get information and technology commercialized it.
Response:
I think that the author point in this article is very interesting. I certainly agree with it because I feel like we all are relying on our technology too much. I also found that the reading and writing thing he described in the article is true. When I read nowadays I can’t really focus on it even when it’s only a page of a book. The writer uses mostly ethos and logos using examples, and quotes, and history to back up his analytical view.
Reflection:
This text make me wants to try to write something on a computer then on paper and see what’s the difference between the two of my writing. I think that would be very interesting to try.I experience some of the stuff that the author described in the article and I certainly agree with most of his points. I might use his idea of technology and the way we think incorporate it into our next essay depending on what the topic going to be.
