List of Top and High Impact Journals in the Field of Management (Update: April 16 2014)
(compiled by Ed Carberry, Benyamin Lichtenstein, Stephan Manning, Suhaib Riaz)
The primary purpose of this list is to guide PhD students’ (and junior faculty) decision-making when it comes to selecting journals for paper submissions. Typically top-tier journal submissions take longer and are more risky than second-tier journal submissions. We list here both top-tier journals and a selection of widely recognized, high-impact second-tier journals. (Others can be found in Harzing’s list as well as other rankings.) Boundaries between these categories are blurry, subjective and change over time. However, our list of top-tiers in particular corresponds with what most top business schools (in the U.S.) would consider to be A journals. Having at least an R&R in a top journal can significantly increase chances of getting a job interview or even a job for tenure-track positions. Conversely, publishing in journals that are not even listed as second-tier can result in exclusion from any further consideration.
Other useful resources are:
- Harzing’s Journal Quality List: http://www.harzing.com/jql.htm (compilation of different rankings)
- ABS list: 3 or 4 stars would qualify as high impact or top (there is no extra category for top) http://www.bizschooljournals.com/node/4
- ABDC list: A* would quality as either top or very high impact; A is high impact http://www.abdc.edu.au/pages/abdc-journal-quality-list-2013.html
- Thomson Reuters Impact Factors: Top 20 journals in Business and Management considered top FT45 list: overlaps partly with top journals listed here, but also includes some low-impact journals http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/3405a512-5cbb-11e1-8f1f-00144feabdc0.html
- Note: Another way to boost impact/citations quite independent of the outlet is by posting new publications on www.academia.edu, www.ssrn.com , scholarworks.umb.edu, www.researchgate.net
