The Green Bench
“Alanis, don’t fall in the water!” was the first thing I heard after sitting down on the green and old bench at Boston Public Garden, right in front of the duck pond. Rays of the sun shine through the slowly emerging clouds, enlightening the picturesque scene of two beautiful swans swimming in the pond. It was my first time going to the Public Garden. Before, I just got to the Boston Common, a rather grey and gloomy area compared to the beautiful garden right behind it. The noise of children playing around and boring machine from the construction site nearby drown out the quacking of the ducks. “Alanis don’t get dirty!” Alanis’ mother and grandmother were sitting next to me on the bench. They worry quite a lot about her, every five minutes they scream “Don’t fall in the water!” or “Stop, you get dirty!”

Instead of a green one, the young family is sitting on a blue bench in front of a duck pond. The little girl, around three years old, squeaks with pleasure at the sight of the upcoming ducks, lured by the breadcrumbs her mother throws into the pond. Many people walk around the park, either with their dogs or children, to enjoy the last couple of warm days. The grand castle is enthroned on a hill right behind the pond, making the scene look like a landscape painting. It is a warm autumn day, and the foliage has changed from green to several nuances of yellow and red. Nevertheless, the little girl is wearing a cap, a pink one which fits perfect to the rest of her outfit. “Watch out, don’t fall into the water, my dear!” says the mother with a caring tone.

Alanis was not doing anything reckless to justify her mother’s concern, in my opinion. She was just crouching on the edge of the pond, playing with stones she found in the water. She wore a black dress with black and white striped tights. Her long brown hair was held together by a white ribbon. Every piece of cloth was neatly color-coordinated. Alanis seemed to have a lot of fun, playing with other children on the pond and watching the ducks dipping their head under water. People walking by stopped to enjoy the charming scene, taking pictures of the animals or children? I don’t know. The only thing I know is that I was sitting at a green bench observing it all. I have to write an essay about eavesdropping, so I thought the Public Garden would be the best place to do so.

The little girl loses interest in the ducks and moves on to the four-legged friends walking all around the park, accompanied by the father. She walks rather clumsy, but still appropriate for her age. She picks up the leaves, which lie on the ground, and presents them proudly to her parents. Suddenly, she says “Doggie!” and runs towards a German Sheppard a few meters ahead of her. The dog is of course not on a leash. The father doesn’t realize the deadly thread at first, smoking calmly his cigarette. But keeping sight of her daughter, the mother hurries to the place of action and quickly grabs her one and only child. “Don’t go near dogs you don’t know!” says the mother with a no longer caring but upset voice. She darts an angry glance at the dog owner, who doesn’t even realize that his child-friendly dog is the object of fear in this little story. On the way home, the parents argue about parental supervision, they do not share the same opinion.

I tried to act natural, so Alanis and her family didn’t notice that I observe and take notes about them. After all, am I allowed to observe other people, use their names and write something about them? At the end of the day, I invade their privacy. However, I don’t have a secret agenda like the NSA, but only good intention in writing my essay. After an hour, I got a little bit tiered of observing them, so I started reading my assignments for class, eating my peanut butter-oat bar, which I had to share with a pushy squirrel, and calling my mum to check on her, or rather to let her know that I am okay. Doing all this stuff, I was rather absent minded and therefore very surprised as the Alanis’ Grandmother approached me to ask where the next CVS Pharmacy is. The notes about her family trip to the duck pond were lying on my lap, so I quickly answered her and hoped that she didn’t see them. Actually it’s kind of nice, now I know that they go shopping afterwards, probably to buy groceries or cosmetic products like hand sanitizer…

The cold wind blows on my face, still tanned from the tropical heat wave that occupied Boston in the last months. I remember my landlord saying, that the weather in New England is always unpredictable, so I shall be prepared for everything. Winter is coming. Thank God I leave the east coast just before the snow comes… But now I have a problem: it’s cold, windy and it rains, and I don’t have a cap to protect my ears from falling off. I left all my winter clothes in Germany, because I just wanted to take one suitcase. It is not easy to pack clothes for three seasons into one suitcase, so I had to compromise. I am a hat person, I can wear anything from a headband to hat. It’s the same thing with big sun glasses, but that would be another story. I am on my way to Haymarket on that stormy day. I realize that I need to buy a cap, the hood on my jacket is not enough. I look around and noticed that the cold weather is only bothering me and no one else around me. It is funny how different people react to weather condition: some wear long trousers in summer and others wear no cap in winter. I am very sensitive to extreme weather, so need to be prepared. I need to buy a cap. Every time it gets cold at the end of the year, I wonder how many people actually don’t wear a cap in winter. One friend of mine told me once “You like hats, you are lucky. But I don’t think they suit me, so I prefer to freeze rather than to look funny.” I will never understand that. If my mum taught me one thing, it’s that you need to keep your head warm in order not to get a cold.

The little girl is taking a bath, playing with her bath duck and remembering the fun day at the pond. The mother is sitting next to the bathtub, enjoying the sight of her happy and healthy baby girl. Her husband peeks into the room and asks when they are ready to leave for the birthday party. “I just need to wipe her dry, we’ll be ready in 15 minutes!” Half an hour later, the whole family is gathered in the hallway, ready to leave. They are already late, the father doesn’t want to upset his mother on her birthday. As they are sitting in the car, the mother noticed that she forgot something. She hurried back to the apartment, to the great displeasure of her husband. After a couple of minutes she comes back to the car, opens the door from the back, puts a cap on her daughters head and says “So she doesn’t get a cold.”. The father merely rolls his eyes. He doesn’t want to have the discussion again.

After sitting on the green bench for over three hours, I am very keen to get up move around for a little bit. As much as I like to sit on a bench in a public garden and observe other people, they do not provide the right ergonomic position for your back. I cast a last glance on the ducks and swans of the pond. I could actually write an essay about my childhood trauma, about the time I was attacked and bitten by a duck in Amsterdam, but that would exceed the limit of this essay. Nevertheless, they are an important part of the story and delight me at the present day. I walk up to Park Street and take the red line back to Savin Hill, wondering what Alanis and her family might be doing after the CVS Pharmacy. According to the weather and time of day, I would assume that they maybe visit an ice cream parlor, or a toyshop to buy a present for Alanis. I guess I will never know the truth. Sitting in the train, I decided to never have children. A group of middle school boys just enter the train, playing nutcracker. Do not confuse it with the Tchaikovsky’s beautiful ballet. They are standing in the middle of the train and punching each other in the crotch screaming “Here comes the nutcracker!” Every single person in the train is stressed out by them, but no one complains about it. I should have spent several hours in the train instead of the park. I could have filled hundreds of pages with observations of interesting or rather particular people. But I prefer my green bench in the park. It brings back memories of my happy childhood.
