The first week of costal ecology has been very intense but I enjoyed every moment of it (with the exception of my group’s reliable soil sipper fails). I’m thrilled to finally do some field work out in the marshes, collecting soil samples and doing transects. Professor Beth Boyle is very informative and her style of lecture is engaging. However, the conservation of angular momentum of Beth’s class added to independent study and capstone projects has rotated of the winds of this semester into dizzy and forceful tornado. Hang on tight!

New Month, New Class
So hydrology came to a swift end, it was informative and nice to have such a lovely professor such as Dr. Ellen Douglas. With the start of a fresh new month and a new class, Costal Ecology with Professor Beth Boyle I am uber excited for this class and the adventures to come.
Seminar on How to Read a Scientific Paper
Today Dr Hannigan graced us with her presence at a poetry brunch with Len at the field station. She also gave a seminar on how to read and write scientific papers which I found to be very helpful. We cleaned up the beach a little and it was an overall informative and environment friendly day. I can’t wait to see how the last week of hydrology unfolds as this this month winds down to an end.
First Week of Hydrology
Well…that wasn’t that bad. The first week of hydrology was fun, experimenting on density, displacement, and buoyancy of water. Unit conversions weren’t so bad, I really enjoyed doing homework as a group with my fellow students, the mere presence of them alone brought motivation in Brobdingnagian proportion. I’m looking forward to the next few weeks with Professor Ellen Douglas.
Thoughts on Eco-poetics and first few weeks
Hello, I’m Timchi and this is my first time experiencing any kind of study abroad let alone any time in Nantucket. So far this experience has been amazing with the first eco-poetics class with Len Germinara really breaking the ice and bringing this group of people together. I feel Len’s class opened us up and made the group more comfortable with communication, I especially like his ‘sitting in a circle’ activity. I also enjoyed the speakers that gave their time, I particularly enjoyed Regie Gibson’s talk. Len’s class also opened up my writing and public speaking skills which will definitely translate into my scientific papers about carrying capacity and sustainability later down the line. As for now I am looking forward to meeting more wonderfully welcoming locals, the next block of hydrology, and everything else this island has to offer.
