Research

Prof. Karen Ricciardi
Associate Professor of Mathematics
School for the Environment

As a mathematician, my research is focused on overcoming challenges in using numerical models to develop optimal management practices.  In particular, I have worked on hydrologic systems where models of groundwater flow, contaminant transport and salt water intrusion are used.  When uncertainty of the physical parameters of groundwater models is accounted for, the numerical intensity of using models to develop best management practices is prohibitive in determining solutions to optimization problems.  This research is truly interdisciplinary, as it utilizes advances in numerical modeling, optimization and physical hydrology.
