For connect, note that once a smartbooks is past due, you can still “recharge” for partial credit but it will show a zero (I will fix the late penalty).  If you recharge to study for the quiz, it will NOT affect your grade.

First quiz is Tuesday 3/11 in regular class.  More details next week.

Tech Issues we have created in last decade (some to be discussed next week):

Privacy – Tradeoff of Security for Liberty.  Snowden, Pizza Order Video & NSA post 9-11 changes.  Since then, GPS, CCTV cameras/facial recognition/Clearview AI.  No easy answers here…

Identity Theft – Phishing – Trying to get information to commit identity theft.  Be smart!!
Use www.annualcreditreport.com – every 4 months (or weekly since Covid).
– Deter, Detect, Defend. (FTC.GOV/idtheft) for more tips.

Brains are changing – Long term memory, focused study, curiosity.

Encryption – Based on public & private keys. Works really well, as long as nobody figures out factoring 256 bit numbers.

Authentication – Proving who you are – Fingerprints, UserID & PW.
Authorization – What can I do.

– Intellectual Property

– Distraction & Complexity (think about GPS)

– Social skills – Changing communication

– Phishing -> Identity theft

Internet SHOULD NOT necessarily mean free.
– Intellectual Property – copywrite, patents, trademarks

Turning things off not always effective for security.  Humans First!

Misc Terms – Spyware, Malware, Firewalls.
