Anny interviewed her dad:
From the age 14-16 working. 16 years old I was fisherman, working for a cousin of mom (aunt) I learned how to drive , boat, being a machine, and being a second captain, taking care of myself and family. I was slave, 17 years old, I was in jail in Vietnam for escaping.
Did you feel safe?
All my life I’ve been on boats, farming..I was scared of nothing, I had nothing.
What did you do?
Second day I came to America, I started working in Chinatown cutting fish (at the 88 market) for three months… the whole summer. I started the 8th grade at 16 (but in reality 19) I couldn’t learn because I was embarrassed being the oldest and biggest kid.
Tell me a time when you encountered an obstacle while coming to this country. What did you do about it?
Not understanding English, I went right to the teacher and learned more by hanging out with the teacher.I then owned a couple books with his help.I was given a lot of life advice because they thought I was so low
I wanted to serve the country. I just wanted a regular job, a wife, a house and two kids. I wanted a simple life. Now: I want my kids to go to college, get a good job and as long as my kids are happy I am happy.
If you had all the money in the world, what would you do with it?
Donate to the poor, anyone in need because you have your arms, legs..you have everything.I was poor so I understand.
Would you change anything about your journey?’
I wish I came here at a younger age so that I can have more education. I didn’t go to school when I was in Vietnam.
