Throughout this article many different scientist have brought to our attention that the internet may actually be making us stupid. The argument is that after this past decade or so, so professors and scholars who used to gets thrills from reading, can no longer read long text. It’s not that they can’t read it, but that they lack the attention span. All of the scientist had similar statements saying that they feel as though they think differently. Every since the internet has been around, it has become easier, and faster to do research. This eliminates all of the hours of reading researchers were forced to do. Now all of that information could simply be found by the type of one google search. This is the reason people do not read books any more. Why read a book when you can get the same information much quicker. These scientist argue that the internet changed the way they think and now when they read, they are simply skimming for the information. One things that struck me as interesting was the comparisons made by media theorist Marshall McLuhan; “Once I was a scuba diver in the sea of words. Now I zip along the surface like a guy on a Jet Ski”. This is an eye opener because it makes you think about the importance behind the text. When reading off of the internet people are not necessarily looking for details, just the answer. The internet is helpful in a way it is efficient but it is making us . It is no longer about what you read, but how. We are how we read. It is clear that reading from the internet puts “efficiency” and “immediacy” above everything else which is why scientist and many other have come to rely on computers to mediate our understanding of the world.
I don’t necessarily agree with these statements that these scientist have concluded. IN my opinion intelligence is not based on if you can read a complicated text, my interpretation of intelligence is being a well-informed. Not necessarily, how you learn something, but what you’re learning. This is basically the opposite of what some of the arguments in the text we read. However i still stand by my argument for many reasons. One reason i think the internet is actually making us smarter is because there is an endless amount of information that could be read. There is information about literally everything in the world, and can be accessed from almost anywhere. This is not possible with books. Sure books have valid information, but these books can now be found online. Or even better than finding the full book online, now there are even website to help you better understand the text. Don’t you think someone who actually understands the text would be a better way to obtain the information than trying to do all the work someone else did. We are living in the future where everything is moving forward and books are of the past. Books lack efficiency and effectiveness which is what we need in the modern world to excel in life. The internet makes it much easier to obtain information.
This text will not necessarily help me with my futuring reading or writing. I learned that the internet is more efficient and provides information faster than a book which everyone knows. The point f this text is to try and promote the negative effects of the internet but for me it does the opposite. The argument being made is not sufficient and i do not believe them, however there was sufficient evidence to back up their aim. Although there was no relevant or recent examples and most of the observants were lder people who are not used to the ways of the internet. This may be the reason that i did not fully follow their argument because there was a bias in the age being observed. i myself have learned a lot from the internet which is a valid example of a recent example of someone who learns more from the internet. Evidence is the key to an argument, so in my writing i will make sure my examples are strong and relevant to the text and audience.
