Study Abstract – Brief

Upon arrival to the United States, African immigrant youth will enroll in a public school in hopes of becoming familiar with the nuances of the American English, culture, and the structure of the United States educational institution. My dissertation aims to examine how African immigrant youth build on their existing knowledge while acquiring new training to inform their understanding, access, and utilization of educational resources during the transition to post-secondary trajectories. Findings will contribute to the academic literature shaping African immigrant students’ experiences in the United States. After this study, I hope to generate information about the African immigrant high school experience that can be used to enhance the existing support structure for immigrant students as they prepare for post-secondary education and the workforce.
