George R.R. Martin

mmm

The website for George R.R. Martin is really fitting to the type of writing he does. Famous for writing the epic series of ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, the inspiration for the popular Game of Thrones tv show, Martin is a very dark writer who loves fantasy and action. The site portrays a lot of that as the home page shows images of knights riding horses in battle, with another image of a white dragon breathing fire. The website contains many features for fans of the novel series as well as the television show. There are current news events that relate to both of them as well as upcoming appearances from Martin and promotional events for the book and show. The website also sells products such as the books, calendars, and products of clothing. It really focuses on the franchise that all started from Martin’s books. The color scheme of the website as well as the layout, takes you to a different atmosphere. There is a fantasy based vibe going that is a mix of medieval times and middle earth (the epic Lord of the Rings series from Tolken). It combines for essentially what the world of Game of Thrones is. Another cool and ironic feature on the website is a blog written from Martin, however it is listed as ‘not a blog’ which shows the author’s weird sense of humor. All in all this website is a true reflection of Martin and his work. This helps me think about the type of writing that is portrayed in my own and what kind of thematic elements I would use if I had a portfolio-type site. It really helps me paint a picture in my head of what one should look like.

The people are standing to watch them march in

A life not lived is a life wasted

This photograph from the top 10 photography composition rules article, is a picture that really stuck out to me because it portrayed the beauty of life.  It is a picture emphasizing the viewpoint which is an aerial view. It shows the picture in a whole different light. If the picture was in the view point of the man, you couldnt see the distance of the ocean and all its vast beauty. It has all the balancing elements and follows the rule of thirds. There is symmetry in patterns with the ocean and the sand. All in alll the composition of this picture is outstanding and follows almost all of the 10 rules.

I see this image being one of the most beautiful out of the 10 images shown for examples in the rule of composition. I loved this picture because I believe it was telling a story.  A story about a man who just wants to sit down for a moment and take a break from his stress free life. The other pictures showed scenery but this one had a man in it. This man wanted to enjoy the world for all of its beauty. It is in a large part, part of a greater message. You have to enjoy the little things in life. Sometimes you need to get away from everyone around you and just sit there and watch mother nature at work. The other pictures are shots of places or people from around the world but the simplicity of it makes it so special.

It truly got to me in an emotional level because it had me think about the greater meaning of our lives. A life not lived isn’t a life at all. It is just a wasted opportunity. Sitting there on the sandy beach must be the most peaceful part of his life and he has to let the moment sink in to really enjoy it.
