This novel was one of the most interesting novels I have ever read, it caught my attention from the beginning and with no hesitation, I was eager to read to the end. This is as a result of Margaret’s persuasive unique writing style causing her readers to have such a clear vision of the characters that her audience may think that they came to reality by just basically reading. A great example of this is during the sexual act she describes,”it was like being on an operating table, in the full glare, like being on a stage. I was conscious that my legs were hairy, in the straggly way of legs that have once been shaved but have grown back; I was conscious of my armpits too, although of course, he couldn’t see them. I felt uncouth. this act of copulation, fertilization perhaps, which should have been no more to me than a bee is a flower, had become for me indecorous, an embarrassing breach of propriety, which it hadn’t been before”. Her goal was for her readers to grasp the information so that they can picture what took place in the story which showed how powerful her writing was.
Another aspect was she spoke about was the role of women in society. Women were basically property whose main role was to bear children without their consent. Women had no rights and so they were deprived of many things that a normal average woman would be able to have like education. This system was designed for women to believe that they are not worthwhile but their main role in life was to bear children. For instance, she mentioned ” in some countries, I am considered the outside woman. it’s my job to provide what is otherwise lacking”. I think although she felt it was wrong, she accepted it because she not only didn’t know her worth but society made her feel that this was the right way of thinking.
