Upon close reading Friday’s assignment chapters I noticed that Offred’s style of reminiscing has changed. Before I feel like she would have small random thoughts that almost never made sense or connected to what she was talking about in her current life. But, now her reminiscing feels deeper. F0r example, after Offred states that in a way she’s the commander’s mistress she recalls when we first met Luke and he was married and she was sort of his mistress. She also recalls how Moira always thought it was a bad idea etc. I’m starting to see more and more connections between then and now.  Also, her reminiscing about previously having a job in the library shows an ironic connection to her current job, and why she’s so enthusiastic about reading with the commander (she almost sees the reading as a form of intimacy between them). Not only has Atwood better-defined conversations with quotations but they are a lot more elaborate now. It’s not just Offred saying “Yes” or greeting or agreeing — she’s having actual conversations now. Her relationship with Ofglen has evolved to where they have talked, as well as her evolving relationship with the commander. Offred is gaining some bravery points. Not only has she been talking to Nick, but she’s not having conversations with Ofglen, and asking risky questions to the commander. She feels entitled to things, she’s not just following orders anymore and I think Atwood’s way of showing that is by pushing Offred little by little. It started with the mysterious latin quote, then the public flirting, then the commander, then the lotion, then the pen, and now by questioning what has happened. She even feels power over the commander and Serena and Nick — there has been some serious evolving.
