THE ART OF FICTION

Atwood technique and theme.

Atwood utilizes techniques that keep the reader interested in the story. There’s a suspense after most chapters, especially the ones with the flashbacks. Those chapters leave you wanting more and that is a brilliant strategy to allow someone to read a book.

Offred wanting to find out what happen to Luke also makes us want to know how did he disappear? Or is he really dead? Ad now that she mentions that her mother has disappeared to we want to also find out what happen to her mother. I use this two examples to show that there’s always one thing after the other. Once the mystery about look is solved then we are going to read further to figure out what has become of her mother. As readers I’m sure that we have all this mysteries unfolded in our heads and maybe the whole story but, we want to read the book to see if our predictions are true.

I think that the theme that Atwood is conveying is acceptance. I say this because in chapter 26 when talking about her meetings with the Commander she says ” Sometimes I think she put it up to it”. And ” Maybe she’s withdrawn from him, almost completely; maybe that’s her version of freedom”. Serena is accepting the fact that her and the commander have nothing in common. There is no reason for them to be still married therefore, She’s releasing him to offred who does a better job at keeping him company. Maybe Serena is rebelling against the rule of her society that a woman and a men should stay together even if they don’t love each other.
