UMass Boston College of Management Program for Academic Success Strategies

Weekly Word to the Wise: Success is Key!

Hi everyone,

It is important to strive for success, especially when it comes to academics. Below are 5 tips on how to make this semester the best one yet!

  • Tip 1: Know and use on-campus resources. UMass Boston offers extensive resources to help students succeed at academics, extracurricular activities and career growth. Career Services, the CM Tutoring Center and advisors are all tools students can use to get the most out of their available resources. The sooner you utilize these resources, the more successful you will become!
  • Tip 2: Get involved. It is statistically shown that college students who are involved in any extracurricular activities are more likely to be better students. Go to all classes-skipping class is the best way to fail. Attend every class and be a part of each one. Ask questions, visit your professors during office hours and discuss class material with other students. It’s your education…so be a part of it, and strive to be good at it!
  • Tip 3: Sleep. Get enough sleep and eat a balanced diet. This a practical, stay-healthy-and-you-will-do better-in-school fact. Junk food, binge drinking, doing drugs, and staying up all night do not create a successful scholar. Take care of you. Your success depends on it.
  • Tip 4: Prioritize.  Education is your #1 priority at this time in your life. All decisions must be made around that priority. Sure, it would be fun to spend your time off at the beach, but not if you have to finish a term paper. At the same time, you want to have a social life. You want to find a comfortable balance between the two.
  • Tip 5: Focus and be Confident. This is the single most important strategy for success. Focus on what you want, on what you are doing, on where you are at the moment. Focus on each and every class and assignment. Don’t let your attention be diluted with outside interests until your schoolwork is completed. You also want to be confident in your yourself. Have a spirit of conquering the class and enter the class with confidence of succeeding.
