Reading for your courses can be extremely overwhelming, and at times hard to remember. With multiple classes, work schedules, and other obligations on your mind, it can be difficult to retain the information you are reading, especially if you do not find it interesting.
Here are some tips to successfully retain information you have read:
- Find a quiet location to read: Whether it be the library or your home, wherever you can fully focus on the material you are reading without distractions is the best place for retaining information.
- Question yourself during and post-reading: During and after reading, be sure to take a moment to reflect on what you have just read. Questioning things such as “What did I learn?” can help aid in retaining information.
- Take notes: Be sure to take notes on the information you are reading. By utilizing multiple senses, you are better retaining information. It is also helpful to listen to readings if the textbook you are reading have an audio option!
- Skim chapter titles prior to reading: Another useful aid in reading retention is overviewing the chapters prior to the reading. Being aware of the future topics you will read will keep your mind flowing and help you relate information to future reading topics.
- Read when fully energized: It is helpful to read in the morning or whenever you feel most energized and alert! Reading can often make you tired, so it is essential to choose a time that you are alert enough to retain information.
