The Boston Union Teacher is the BTU’s award-winning union newspaper, published monthly during the school year for over half a century. The newspaper keeps BTU members up to date on everything from contract negotiations to retirement benefits, while also serving as a forum for educators’ voices and a means of publicizing the union’s organizing efforts to the wider Boston community.
In 2021, the BTU sent its in-house archive of the Boston Union Teacher–377 back issues stored in file boxes–to the Northeast Document Conservation Center for digitization. The resulting digital archive, one of the first of its kind for an educators’ union in the nation, is housed by UMass Boston on the Open Archives platform. The collection is freely available and full-text searchable. You can browse issues by date, and download them as PDFs. While this is not a complete run of the newspaper, the collection does contain issues dating back to 1963, as well as extensive coverage from 1970-2010.
Digital copies of the Boston Union Teacher since 2010, as well as up-to-date information on the current newspaper, can be found on the BTU website under Boston Union Teacher Newspaper. Michael Maguire and Anne Slater are the current Co-Editors of the Boston Union Teacher. Reach them by email at mmaguire@btu.org and aslater@btu.org.
