In a day and age where most of us consume social media and online rhetoric to a point of assimilation with our daily routine, information surrounding media and its forms is also on the rise. Coinages and terms are thrown out, and as this information surrounding media is on the rise, it can be helpful to differentiate some of these terms.
Multimodal and multimedia are both expressions you might see when reading up on this subject, but what do each of these terms mean?
Multimodal, as it’s the root word “mode” might suggest, refers to the medium used to deliver or convey information. Examples of these modes or channels of information are inclusive to: images, text, audio, video, color, etc. Multimodal projects make use of two or more modes to convey meaning and information.
Multimedia refers to the delivery of the person creating the rhetoric chosen for their information. Examples of this might be a book, a show, a podcast etc.
In summary, multimodal refers to the channels used to relay information and text, and multimedia refers to the platforms used by the composers of media.
