Climate Assessment Survey

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion along with the Climate Survey Working Group (CSWG), a cross-section of UMB staff, students, and faculty partnered with Dr. Susan Rankin of Rankin and Associates Consulting to conduct a university climate assessment that will provide valuable baseline data for developing and implementing a diversity strategic plan.


Assessment focus:

  • Structural diversity (systems look)
    • Diversity of faculty, staff and students
    • Programmatic – Policies, programs and processes
  • Psychological climate
    • Perceptions about aspects of campus diversity
  • Behavioral/Inter group campus climate
    • Recruitment/retention
    • Event attendance

Climate Assessment Projected Time Line:

Phase 1 – Spring 2012


  • Initial proposal meeting with the CSWG
  • Meetings (conference calls) with the CSWG to begin work on the assessment tool
  • Review of salient data and other information as provided by the CSWG


  • Begin Development of assessment tool
  • * Development and delivery of Test survey
  • Development of Communication and Marketing Plan

Phase II – Summer 2012


  • Continue and complete assessment tool


  • IRB Proposal Development Approval projected- Aug 15, 2012

Phase III – Fall 2012


  • Survey Administration
  • *Development of survey invitations, reminder communications, prizes


  • Data Analysis

Phase IV – Spring 2013


  • Development Report


  • Presentation of Report to community


  • Facilitate Planning Retreat (to be determined at the completion of Phase IV)
