The Struggle to Juggle

By Off-Campus Living

Sometimes I wish I could clone myself so that I could be in two places at once.

College is tough. It’s even tougher when you’re trying to balance three jobs amidst a crazy workload from classes, keeping up with family and friends all while taking care of your mental and physical health.

Let me tell ya, it’s not easy but it’s definitely doable. Granted there have been times where all I wanted to do was just stay in bed and watch Friends all day long.

Whilst, there have been days that I worked 3 jobs back-to-back and would be so exhausted by the time I got home, that I would pass out within minutes. And for someone whose an insomniac that’s a big deal!

Another challenge of juggling three jobs is getting from one job to the others on time. Since I work at a gym, my school, and the South Bay plaza, days that I am scheduled to work at all three of my jobs I commute from one place to the other as quickly as I can.

I’m either hopping on the morning shuttle or scrambling to find the nearest uber driver. But of course… you have to account for Boston traffic and delayed T times meaning I need to leave my apartment 15-45 minutes before my shifts starts (pending which job I’m going to).

So how does one manage to find the time and energy to balance homework, friends, and projects all while being juggling three jobs?

I owe my success to proper time management. One of the biggest aid’s that has helped me manage my time and schedule effectively is my Calendar app on my iPhone. At the beginning of each week, I input all my work shifts, classes, events, and plans into that week’s calendar to keep everything organized and ensure I’m not double-booked for anything. There are various tools that you too can use to stay organized.

How to do it?

Planners and Agendas

Learning to plan for your day the night before will help you get organized and prepared. Although it may seem like an extra step at night time, you will thank yourself the next morning.

Sticky and post-it notes

Using sticky notes and post-its to leave yourself reminders and deadlines can help you meet your goals and stay on track.

Calendars

Using a calendar to insert all your classes, tests, work shifts, meetings, events, and programs keeps you on track every time! Be sure you check it though…

Make to-do lists

The most important of all the tasks you have to complete are those that need to be done now. So by listing everything that has to be done throughout the day lists will help you remain on top of everything.

Prioritize

Prioritizing what needs to be done first and figure out what can wait a while. Try to complete things in order of importance.

Last thing…

Lastly, be sure to remember the most important aspect of being a professional juggler. CUT YOURESELF SOME SLACK! Cutting yourself some slack and taking a day off to de-stress, recover and energize for the coming week. Today’s workforce is ever-evolving and so you gotta stay on your toes and learn to face new challenges every day.
