Wiki Project

So here is second week of our Wiki Project. The team is organized and we are all ready to research the info on Peddocks Island. Skype, Google Group and Twitter helps the team stay in touch and monitor the tasks. I myself really enjoyed learning so much about Boston Harbor and its magnificent history. At the same time, I learned how to work in a virtual team and organize things without in person meetings. I am definitely planning to use these communication channels in my other classes for projects, very useful tools!

Smart Mobs!

Turned on mobile devices reveal at what location the phone is being used, therefore can identify where the person is. The obvious main advantage of using mobile phones as a population monitoring tools is because it is a lot faster and easier to conduct than conducting in-person surveys. The question of privacy and confidentiality seems to be the drawback of this monitoring process though. At the same time, the immediate results of mobile monitoring delivery of real-time data is a lot more efficient!

Powerful Mobiles

Smart mob technologies seem to be very powerful solution to any kind of an arising issue.Looking back at situation in Philippines 2001, more than one million Manila citizens coordinated by the text messages showed up for the demonstration and brought the government down. A million people coordinated by the text messages seem to be quite impressive ! The power of smart mobs continues to spread very fast. Smart mobs make it easy to share the information with the people and get them together. Another example is Upoc ( “universal point of contact”) a New York based mobile phone services provider sponsors communities of interest, such as ” nyc terrorism alert”, “celebrity watch”. It makes it really easy to share the information with other members of the community.

Wireless Internet

In the light of recent technical advancements and some regulatory changes mobile devices allowed customers to access inexpensive high speedĀ  Internet.Wireless Internet becomes available at areas previously not feasible for wired Internet connection which makes it very attractive to customers. Spectrum, which is rare resource of technological innovation may cease to be one in the future. Subsequently, the government will no longer need to regulate spectrum’s use to protect the customers. The potential threat to the customers arises from powerful telecommunication businesses, such as AT&T, FCC, etc.
